Why can't you connect it to your laptop? You could get vcds pro for around 400stg. Whats your budget? and are you a tech?

because your car is diesel it may not be eobd compatible (not till 2004 i think)
But you could try a generic scan tool. altough the correct merc tool is very in depth and the car has many complex sytems.if your not a tech you won't really find much use for a scanner.

ebay is your friend you can get a scanner for your computer for about 20 quid does most models from 96 up but as above unless your a tech you wouldnt really need one.

Get a vagcom cable for €15 on ebay and borrow a laptop if you want vagcom functionality in an enclosed unit expect to pay 400-600 euro which unless you're planning to rent out your services is nuts!

I seen few on dealextreme but dont know too much about them and there is no reviews.

Well. What you need to know is that if you get an eobd scanner it will only cover engine, and maybe abs/airbag if it's a good scanner. If your using a scanner to decide wether or not to buy a car then I suggest you pay a local vw tech the money to check out the car for you and run a full scan on the car. This will cover all modules of the car from engine /transmission to abs, airbag central locking radio central electric etc............It will show up all faults on the car, where -as a generic scan tool will NOT show all fault's only emissions related ones

VW scanner shows me all what i need make self test as well so its no point to pay mechanic for it (every time when i need to check car-beside this sometimes its impossible to take this car to mechanic)
    for example this one:

I didn't think a generic scanner just pulls up only emissions fault. Can anyone else confirm this?

I'm thinking of getting a vagcom cable for a 03 Passat and 02 Golf.

No, it shows a lot more information. It does not do manufacturer specific stuff like immobilisers etc.

The link there has a features list and besides loads of other stuff, them mian things im getting it for is to be able to moniter things like fuel pressure and boost, also it gives trouble codes for engine managment errors and the ability to turn them off, also handy things like giving the car a valet mode!

I bought this lead off this crowd in the North have used it a few times on the Passat using the freeware version of VAGCOM cant go wrong for 20euro delivered! You can view and clear codes with the lead and if you buy the license off ross tech you can change parameters regards the different controllers on the car.
