    Hey,

I'm heading to st anton in March and was wondering have any boarders been there. Any advice on what areas/slopes to head for? I've been twice before. Also, any tips on a good school/instructor for a private lesson?

    Thanks

Thanks for the Links - Useful stuff there.

I think it is dear to buy gear in Austria. I am thinking of doing the same but will wait and see when I get there. St Anton is a pricey resort by all accounts so I imagine the gear will be the same.

St Anton is dear for most things but was there in mid March before and the shops had started selling off stock.

I got a north face jacket & pal got snowboard for about 1/3 of price in March.

Once its gets towards the end of season you might "bag a bargain". Theres plenty of window shopping to be done But I wouldn't be holding out for a piece of essential gear for 1/2 nothing but you never know.

You will have fun though am jealous.......

Just back from soll and the gear was VERY expensive.A mate priced gear here(snow and rock and irishsnowboards.com) and its was much cheaper to buy here.He ended up renting gear over there(he thought he'd get the stuff there cheaper and use it) and bought when he got back.

Snowboarded there last week for 4th or 5th time.

Is it twice (two weeks) you've snowboarded

All areas of St Anton are good and are a challenge if thats the time you have done. The terrain is vast and varied and noted as suitable for intermediates to expert. Quite simply its probably the best resort in Austria. Added to that you have Lech & Zurs on the same skipass which equally as good.

There are a few easy areas, of simple blue runs, but not many. The basic No1 blue run down from Galzig is difficult enough at five in the evening as there are three pubs (Heustalt, KK & Moosewirt) to pass about a mile up the slopes. This proves impossible.

I haven't used any ski school or instructors but on speaking to others there, their experiences have been good.

Thanks for the reply Mal_1. Yes have been twice before Mal_1.

I was managing well on reds in Morzine and Les Gets last year so hoping I will be okay in St Anton:rolleyes:. I heard its challenging alright. We have some advanced skiers in the group so hence the decision to head there this year.

At least there are pubs on the slopes if it gets too much!!

It is challenging. They don't seem to groom the runs too often. A buddy of mine was there snowboarding early last year and found it a bit tough.

I was there last march skiing. The craic was good and the snow was excellent. You'll be heading to Karazy Kangaruh and Moosewirt for the Apres-Ski.

Just back from St Anton and had a great time. The snow was plentiful and it was sunny every day except on the friday when there was a snow storm which was a bit of an adventure. Hard to tell what was up or down at times.

Also if you need more convincing of how much fun you're going to have, take a look at this:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1253038/Paralytic-piste-How-record-numbers-drunken-Britons-suffering-horrific-accidents-Alps.html

Great stuff altogether. Mind yourself coming out of the Moosewirt (go to the Krazy Kangaruh first).

    - Try Picadilly in the main st for late night drinking with a nightclub and sometimes a band.
    - There's a lovely quiet bar with couches and a fire adjacent to the Pizzeria Pomodoro, dunno what its called though.
    - Also Jacksy's is a sort of Irish bar (but not really) that's worth a visit.
    - And Bar Cuba is alright.
    - If I think of any more places to visit I'll let you know.

As for slopes, there is a new lift to the Rendl Area that leaves from centre of st anton. That has some decent blues and easy reds. and also a snow park, if you're brave enough to do some jumps. Its worth going for a look, just to see the experts do it. The run down to the village is a difficult enough red, but if you're technique is getting good you might as well give it a go.

This is a great resource: http://www.st-antonamarlberg.co.uk/skiing_in_st_anton.html

Also if you want nice long blue runs, try 8, 11, 17, 12, 4, 1 and 5 on this map. You might be more advanced, in which case you should just try to cover the entire area. Don't go down ski route 33 or ski route 3 though. They are the broken black line ones and are very tough.

Also if you are renting, see if you can get a discount card from the hostel you are staying in for one of the shops. Hannes Schrans ski shop is just off the main st and seemed to be cheaper (by st anton standards) than any of the bigger shops: http://www.ski-tirol.eu/de/arlberg/st.anton/sportshop.php ...but to be honest we didn't shop around too hard.
