I'm sure a lot of you listen to his show on todayfm, but for anyone who doesn't, get on it. The other alt/indie DJs around like Alison Curtis are OK but I find a little hit and miss, whereas he plays top music all the time (imo). A thoroughly nice guy too.

    7-10pm Monday-Thursday.

I used to listen to Tom Dunne a bit and thought he was very good. How does McLoone compare? I don't listen to the radio much anymore for some reason. Donal Dineen would be my favourite though..

I used to love Tom Dunne and was worried that the show would go downhill when he left. But in fact, I actually think McCloone is better. Dunne was becoming fairly predictable in terms of the music he played, whereas McCloone probably plays a slightly more eclectic mix. And he comes across as the kind of guy who'd be great to have a pint with.

You can listen to previous shows here. Just checked out his playlist and it's very impressive indeed. I must have a listen later..

Much prefer DD. But that said he does play some decent songs overall. If i find myself near a radio i'd def put it on.

He plays some savage music! I also thought that the show would go downhill after Tom Dunne left Today FM, but Paul McLoone is really good. I like the live sessions that they have on it, the one with The xx was brilliant.

Today FMs evening lineup is good as a whole, McLoone, Curtis, Dineen.

Shame their daytime shows are such pants (but that goes for pretty much every station).

This thread sounds a wee bit like a McLoone love fest - but I agree he's good. Much prefer him to Tom Dunne too. Tom Dunne can be grand but is can be overly cheery in his opinions on all music, McLoone is a bit more honest.

Have to echo those who like him - he pretty much has the same taste as me. And his presenting style is very appealing.

Really enjoy his show but he never ever plays any of my requests:mad:

Have to say I preferred Tom Dunne but in fairness Paul has improved a lot since he started and it is true he probably plays a more eclectic mix. On a more general note (cos Tom used to do this too) any night I turn it on there seems to be some competition for a deluxe re-issue of some classic album or a boxset, and he raves about how you should go out and buy it and how you can win it in the next hour.........i know someone has to pay the bills but it turns me off, Ian Dempseys show in the morning is even worse it seems to be just one long add for their different sponsors.

Great show, met him years ago he's sound too.

McLoone is great and really enjoy his flights of fancy when he gets carried away yapping about some band or other. I still listen to TD on Newstalk, in the afternoons.

I really just don't get Donal Dineen. People who listen to DD are the same people who rave about bands like Animal Collective,(too much hard work).

I texted in with an (imho :p ) astute musical observation about some music he was playing recently and he never read it out. :D

Probably my favourite show on irish radio though.
He just seems to have a nose for good stuff.

The Paul McCloone show is the highlight of my day I must say, I can't fault him. As Loyatemu said the evening lineup on TodayFM is very good. I can't stand listening to Ray Foley or the other self righteous gimp before him.

Dave Couse's show on Sundays at 10 is where it's at. He deserves a daily slot

^ His voice really irritates me!

Paul McCloone is a great show, wide range of music from heavy to light and he doesn't play the latest fad of the day.

Alison Curtis is ok but seems to go for the indie stuff just for the sake of going for the indie stuff.

My favourite (just ahead of Paul) would be Dan Hegarty, a bit more heavier but a fantastic DJ, really knows his stuff and plays requests in my experience :)

Paul McLoone, Dave Couse and Dan Hegarty shows all v good IMO.
I used to listen to Donal Dineen fado fado but he's kinda disappeared up his own ass in recent years, and what's with the accent, he's from Kerry, FFS

That doesn't necessarily mean he has to have an accent like Pat Spillane or Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The part about him disappearing up to his own arse.. I'd actually put him down as the most modest radio presenter in the country.

I agree with everyone saying that Today FM's line up in the evening is good - it really is.

I was a big fan of Tom Dunne's show and was gutted when he went off to Newstalk (i listen to his show in the mornings). I wasn't sure i'd really be that mad on Paul McLoon;s show, but it has definately grown on me. He seems a very amiable bloke and his actually really good at impressions and accents.

Alison Curtis's show afterwards as well is quality. She's another one i'd have a lot of time for. Donal Dineen afterwards is good, but i wouldn't listen every night. It's a good show to fall asleep to.

I used to love the mid noughties line up of Tom Dunne's Pet Sounds and then switching over to 2fm to listen to Jenny Houston at ten pm. I always thought she played some great music. But they moved the schedule around now so that i don't know when she's on or when Dan Hegarty is on so i don't bother with 2FM now.

Digging up an old thread here but used to love Today FM from 7 to past midnight....some really good radio. Now they've gone and fecked it all up with that KC fool an Alison's old slot. He sounds like he is trying to be Ray Foley. Its gone very commerical and has destroyed the flow the evening used to have. Now i turn off at 10....

Agree there. Someone should set up a face book campaign to return Indie music to the 10-12pm slot. Plenty of good DJS out there. John Cadell from Phantom would be a very good candidate IMO. Knows his stuff

Agree totally, I still tune back in for Donal Dineen at 12 but it has ruined the flow. Why oh why did they move Alison, did she request it or what? They should stick in Dave Couse in the 10-12 slot.

Makes no sense to me. They have a breakfast time dj doing 10-12 pm slot and indie dj (yeah I know she produced dempseys show before that) doing 5 am slot. Whatever about her reasons for leaving, they should have replaced her with an indie dj.

I don't listen to Alison Curtis so didn't know she was gone. It's nothing against her, I'm just never listening to the radio at that time of night, normally don't switch it back on until I'm in bed and Dineen is on.

I like McLoone's show and he's an all round nice guy too.

I never receive any of the prizes I win off him anymore though. It's like there's a blackhole and if I win a CD they just dump it in there.

So y'know, besides that he's great.

In the week up to her leaving she was talking about it being an 'exciting opportunity'.....my guess is she was pushed rather than jumped....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,082 ✭✭✭✭Spiritoftheseventies

Yes heard her once or twice on morning shift. A bit dull now. She still has a show out on Sundays which is good.

I've been thinking the exact same thing, i listen to a lot of radio between those hours and although Allison used to get on my tits at times, i always liked her show.

The 2fm alternative at that time isn't much better so i usually stick on the old ipod or tune into newstalk's sports show as it can be entertaining, that is if you're into sports.

Paul McLoone "played" at Gigantic in Galway on Saturday night.

Absolute disgrace. Stop start with no continuity. Had absolutely no interest in being there. Obvioulsy just happy to collect the cheque and leave.

His accent is horrible and I used to find it difficult to stomach more than a minute of his show. Definitely can't stand it now.

Alison Curtis is good on Sundays where she just speaks about the music. Her midweek show was all about filling time and playing pop music with stupid fillers such as games, competitions etc. She was, thus, crap as mainstream is not her thing.

If she was given that slot as alt/indie every night it would be fine but not sure if Today Fm can use their license like that. Probably have a requirement that that part of the day involves a certain amount of chat.

Yes her Sunday show is far more indie than her old 10pm to 12am slot. Far too many gimiics on the show and her pearl jam fixation was a bit annoying. Still her show for the most was good enough

Never heard her play Pearl Jam too much...if I had, I would have listened to her more often!

She had a full month devoted to it. Called Pearly January. Song every night.

She did the same for Bruce Springsteen the month before that. Don't see a big problem with it really, Pearl Jam fit right at home in the indie category that her show claimed to represent.
