Hi folks, I'm in bed wit the flu (sniff, sniff) and I thought finally I'd look into this.

I bought a 2nd hand iPhone3GS about a month ago and never got around to it. When I connect to iTunes, I can see the songs greyed out and the iTunes is telling me that if I proceed with the sync it will erase the music on the iPhone. I am wondering is there some method of backing up the phone to a folder on my computer & then importing the music files to my iTunes or is there some tried & tested software available to do the job.

Happy New Year to all who took the trouble to read my question and a bountiful 2010 to those who assist me with a reply. :D

I use a program called 'ipod access for windows' which I had to pay for but it works well.
I'm sure there's some free programs on www.download.com

Thanks for the advice furious ox, I went and downloaded a Trial version of a programme and it copied the first 100 tracks off my iPhone. You pay for the full programme if you want to download more, but they are doing a bundle offer, which allows me back up ipods to different Pc's etc.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction :D:D:D

there is a way of doing this with no program needed.
---on itunes, with the ipod connected, make sure use ipod in disk mode is checked(something along those lines)

---on the computer, enable view hidden files, can be found in control panel, or in tools in the toolbar on my computer.

---go to the ipod in my computer and you should see folders that you couldnt see when hidden files were hidden.

---right click on the music folder(think its called music) and unclick hidden.

---go to itunes and in the file menu, click add folder. navigate to the ipod and add the music folder.click it.

---watch itunes import your music:D this has disadvantages, such as no ratings imports and sometimes the music can be named wrong(in around a 4 letter name, the way ipods recognize them)
