Roberts generally make good quality radio sets.

Any idea where the best place to find a Roberts Radio would be around Cork, please?

    Here we are:

"I recall seeing Argos stocking basic Roberts radios a while back. Needless to say, there are Sony Stores in Cork city which do the Sony range or can order them-they did so for me a while back.
Otherwise, there are a number of electrical shops in the city centre who would be able to order something in Im sure."

Bumping an old thread here, can anyone can recommend a good quality MW radio for picking up BBC etc? I don't want an internet radio, must be a MW radio. If it has LW all the better. And the ability to have preset FM channels would be the icing on the cake.
But number one priority is a good quality MW reception.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Why buy new?

Buy a good used hand one from the 70s/80s...

With AM (MW), an inexpensive radio with a good antenna will outperform an expensive radio with a poor antenna, so you should be able to get decent reception if you're willing to maybe put a long wire antenna outdoors (meaning that your receiver would need to have terminals for an external antenna). Alternatively C Crane make a Twin Coil Ferrite AM antenna which apparently is pretty good but pricey.

Best Radio for MW (and Long Wave) reception is the Sony 7600GR, by far. Sony appears to be, or is about to stop production of these excellent portables, though you can still pick them up on Amazon.

The Sangeans (both the ATS 909 and newer 909X) are also good on MW. Long Wave is also good but not as good as the Sony.

The FM section of the Sangean ATS 909X is also very good indeed and better than the ATS 909.

Beware either the Eton G3 or G6. Rubbish on MW and Long Wave.

If you're not that fussed about FM the Sony 7600GR is the best. It's an excellent set for Dxing Long Wave NDBs. It's also possible to hear some transatlantic Dx on the set, especially with a Tecsun AN 200 portable MW loop antenna.

    Exactly what I wanted!
    I see it on Amazon.co.uk for £130 - £180, depending on seller.
Do any shops in Ireland have them? If not, I'll go with Amazon.

Don't think any of the Sony shops are stocking them any more so Amazon might be your only option.

Some people complain about the audio quality, but both of mine are just fine. Not quite as good as the Sangeans but perfectly acceptable.

As I say, FM isn't brilliant. sensitivity is pretty good, but selectivity isn't as good as the others and there's no RDS.

For Medium and Long wave though, nothing can beat the Sony 7600 GR

If you can, I'd save up for an ATS 909X to go with the Sony. Also a very good receiver though not quite up to the Sony on long wave. Great for FM and SSB (the amateur bands, Volmet, etc.). The two make an excellent combination for portable reception.

Just as an example, I was receiving VOCM from Newfoundland last night. The Sony works very well with the wee Tecsun AN 200 portable loop antenna:

Maybe the OP should consider installing a car radio and speaker(s) with a suitable 12 volt mains power supply in their home ?

The advantage of such an arrangement is that most car radios give pretty decent reception and are designed to be used with external aerials.
