    Hi,

I was looking for a plumbing section as i thought this is where this question should be! Anyway there is and has been for a long time a very loud rumbling sound coming from the attic of the house especially when our rads and the fire have been on for a long period of time, usually release the water at this stage so as there wont be any noise...anyway it sounds like its coming from the pipes above in the attic, would anyone know the cause of this or experienced it in their own home?

    Thanks

"usually release the water at this stage" what do you mean by this?

It may be pitching, a term used to describe hot water exiting the expansion pipe into tank in attic.

The cylinder may be as hot as it can get and spits water into the storage tank (big tank). Or it may be the water in the heating has expand so much it spits back into feed and expansion tank (small tank).

Either way the water is getting very hot.

It the pipes reacting to the hot water, when you turn on the hot water you release pressure.
Don't have the heating on when the fire gets hot as you probably have a back boiler too, heated by the fire. Instead switch off the heat and turn on the back boiler only, usually a button close to the fireplace. The back boiler will circulate hot water heated by fire only. Hope this helps.

by turning on the hot tap in the kitchen sink to release the hot water, this stops the rumbling...
