I'm pretty sure that this is an appropriate place to ask this question! How does the Department of Education decide which books to use for each subject? Does a panel review a selection and choose the best one?

The DES makes NO decision on books for any subject. They could not be seen to advocate one book over another. The only thing the DES does is to design the curriculum for each subject.

The decision on what books to use in any given school is a matter for each school individually - that's why you get so many reps from publishing companies calling around to schools around Easter - May of each year in the hope of persuading the school to adopt their book in the school.

You don't have to use any books, you just have to cover the syllabus.
The DES does not 'approve' any textbook over another.
Many of the textbooks do not cover the full syllabus in their subject.

Personally, I have students with such low reading ages that most of the currently available textbooks are worse than useless.

One other word of advice - always teach the course according to the curriculum, NOT according to a book.
