I'm doing a 4 mile swim in turkey for charity in august. I'm not sure how I'd train for. Currently I'm swimming 3 times a week in a pool doing about 50 lenghts. I probably won't be able to swim in open water until the summer. I have access to a pool and gym. Are there training plans online, could someone suggest a training scheme? Thanks in advance.

Get in touch with your local swim coach, Failing that try NUIM, the head coach there is handling the 2012 squad, He'll probably give you some pointers in the right direction. Thats a pretty long swim, your going to have to put in some seriously heavy sessions between now and then. Don't underestimate it. Especially in open water, and if its the one I'm thinking of, you are going to have a current and a high temperature to consider too...

It is a long swim but if the current is with you then it will be easy enough. Did a 3k last summer down in wicklow in under 35mins (That was slow when I seen other swimmers times)....Current with us all the way....4 miles is around 6k or 6000meters.

As for training, try and get used to sea swimming, get used to swallowing sea water.

You would want to up your training to at least 4-5days and do a min of 100 lengths. Try and do sets of 200-300meters.

    Warmup 200meters
    10 X 100meters
    5 X 200meters

    Or do sets of:

    100meters
    75meters
    50meters
    25meters.

Take account of your times doing the 200meters and try and beat the last one...

Oh and one last thing, lash the vaseline on under your arms and inner thighs, you will be sore with friction if you dont. Oh and gooduck and enjoy...
