    Hi all,

Due to the weather, we were all unable to travel to Belfast for the NI Open, and we'd like to compete this month anyway. So we're organising a small tournament for the 30th of this month.

Entry will be €20 and it will be pre reg and pay on the day. Registrations to barry@informedperformance.com stating weight, experience and club. Because it's going to be small, we'll make up brackets based on how long you've been training, so there might be say, novice1 and novice 2 or something.

Hopefully we can put something good together at the short notice in terms of attendance and competition.

    More information:

    10am- register and weigh in.
    10-11.30am- categories made
    11.30- competition starts

Each division will run as a round robin "league format" competition. You fight everyone in your division and gain points for your results. SUBMISSION ONLY. 1 point for a draw, 3 points for a win. Novice divisions are approximately 1 year training and under, intermediates, 1 -3 years training, advanced, 3 years plus.

The idea is to give everyone as many matches as possible.

    barry@informedperformance.com for enquiries/registration

nice! Same weight divisons as last time?

yes indeedy. One thing is though if there's not enough to make good divisions in the adbanced (always the most sparsely populated) we might run some mini-absolutes instead. Say -80 and +80 or something. Based on what I was hearing the last time out, a lot of guys would prefer that instead of having only 1 or 2 turn up in their division. We'll see closer to the date.

Bumping this. I've had some entries in already from people. Thanks for that.

I'd appreciate knowing early on how many people are coming so that we can prepare for numbers with referees etc.

A reminder that this will be a submission only event, which means you HAVE to finish to win!

No, you can have a boring draw, but there is just 1 point for that and not 3.

Agreed but we don't have the whole weekend to run it. 7 minute rounds for advanced categories though.

Barry, what are the regulations for clothing and protective gear?

I'll never deny a man an opportunity to protect that which is most precious to him. You can wear a groin guard. There's no stipulation to wear a mouthguard but you'd be foolish not to. Other than that, any supports or strappings have to be okayed with the referees beforehand.

You wear shorts, you can wear a rashguard if you have moobs, you can't wear a t-shirt. Anything you do wear can be used against you, so your opponent can rashguard choke you if you have one on. He can't however, grab your shorts.

If you have any other queries just fire away and I'll answer them here.

What about slamming? I assume that there's no slamming from guard, but what about take downs, can you go for a big throw to pin? What about if your opponent does a crappy guard pull and ends up with his feet wrapped around you while you're still standing - is it OK to put him through the mat?

We went through this before the last tourny. Slams are fine at Inter and Advanced. Novices cannot slam, we simply don't have the requisite experince with wrestling in Ireland to guarantee the safety of competitors at beginner level. We may have competitors at beginner level who have never so much as wrestled their cat before 3 months ago, and then may have someone from eastern europe who is a beginner BJJ guy but experienced wrestler.

By the by, I would expect that in a submission wrestling competition, wrestling experience should count for just as much as jiu jitsu experience, and that people's registrations reflect that.

Guard slams are out. If there is a situation when someone does a guard pull, and ends in the situation you stated, then it is your responsibility to either stand or put him down, but you may not slam him. There's not much benefit to it in any case. why would you sacrifice your posture if he had closed guard? Other than to make a big noise of course. In the case of what might be termed 50/50s, I instruct the referees to err on the side of the guard puller, not because I love the gward, but because it's the safest method and safety is number 1. Save the big guard slams for the cage :)

However, pick him up and slam him to your heart's content in any other position.

Hey, me and my friend were interested in competing but are unsure of the registration. Can we turn up on the day and register or will we be refused?

Send barry at informedperformance dot com an email with your name, club, weight, and experience and he'll put you in.

Actually, I should go register my guys now.

I've had to re-register here and maybe I've finally shrugged off that Roper moniker, at last!

I'd like to thank everyone for a great day on Saturday. It was small as I expected but a lot of people registered and failed to show to... grrrrr. Add to that the fact that some clubs were away at the Euros too. But it actually made for a great day's grappling. The divisions were competitive and the winners worthy!

    My thanks to:
SBG, Husaria, Gracie Barra NI, QUB Revolution, Spartan, Next Generation, Tuath De Dannan and my own IP/Drysdale Jiu Jitsu guys. Apart from a minor IT blip (don't let me near Excel.... ever!) early in the day it was fun to ref, watch and organise.

Lots of rubberguard in the novice divisions too.... weird.
