    Hi there
I have a Dell Studio laptop and can't get dvd's to play on it. Any help? I have tried several programmes including Windows Media Player, Quick Time Player and Real Player but none of the systems seem to be able to detect the dvd in the drive.

    any syggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

they are original dvd's. I've never watched movies on it before, giving it a go for the first time.

If your drive can see CD's, but not cannot even open a DVD, are you sure it's a DVD drive?

Odds are good that you don't have a video DVD decoder (mpeg2 decoder) installed - it doesn't come by default with Windows.

slowlydownwards linked to VLC media player up the page. Try that first as it comes with an mpeg2 decoder and it's free.

as mentioned VLC is a great option.
    Alternatively google xp codec pack.

If this drive is indeed a DVD drive it could play DVDs out of the box. No other software would be required to open the disk say, to explore the files on it. A media player like VLC Player will playback the movies. I'd say its not a DVD drive or its a faulty DVD drive!

I'm having the same problem with my dell xps m1530 on Win7. I can read and burn dvds but for some reason cannot read commercial ones. The drive makes a tick, tick, glug, sound for a while then nothing really happens and the disc is ejected (The same disc works on the gfs computer). Drive is Teac+-RWDVW28SLC. Talk about annoying!
