    hey,
On first glance the monitor seems peachy! Monitors and tv's have come down alot over the past year or at least it seems & since its just after christmas the price is not all that shocking.
    I have a 22" acer, paid 250 around 2 years ago!

The monitor has a thread in Bargain Alerts.

Seems like good value, one member pointed out the following:
one negative is the tn type display, reduces colour performance a bit, but that what helps bring the price down

Why is this monitor so cheap for a 24" is it a pile of scrap ???
    Probably.
Look in the tech specs at "Panel Type:", cheapo monitors use TN panels, which have their drawbacks.
If you look at the more expensive monitors on that site you'll see the panel type changes as you go up in price.
I've got an S-IPS that I'm quite happy with, and from the TN panels I've seen I swore I'd never buy one. I suppose it depends on how important picture quality is for you. Personally it'd annoy the shít out of me.
This is a really interesting site -> http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6

Dell are infamous for flogging pricey S-IPS monitors until they get rave reviews then cutting the price - while quietly switching the panels for equivalent TN units :(

I would say 80% of TFT monitors sold today are TN displays. Im using one right now and im sure most people who are going to read this web page are also going to be using TN or CRT monitors.

Just cause it has a TN display dont make it a pile of poo.

Which, if your made-up statistic if true, proves nothing apart from people's generally low standards when it comes to display quality.

Proven again by the horrendous LCD TVs that're flying off the shelves.

Can anyone tell me what's in this Insiron 545 that would give it a price of over 900 euro http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?reconfigure=true&vw=icon&cart=ActiveCart&id=7e802557-ee66-4bd0-830e-259f99179b1c&ecomm=ecomm.euro.dell.com&c=ie&l=en&cs=iedhs1

it looks bog standard, no monitor no blu-ray and the saving cost of 478 euro till the end of January looks the more realistic retail price!!

Well here is a good list of S-ips displays.
Just make sure your holding onto your seat when u go and check the price of them.

I my self would love to have a 24inch but the money i would have to pay out for a good one, i could buy 2 TN monitors for that price. And as im very much a gamer i will stick with a non ghosting TN display.

Durrrr, no. I don't see how I can benefit from spending €€€s more on an uprated panel when I primarily write code. Different strokes for different folks, please don't generalise.

Your code will appear crisper and the syntax highlighting will be more colour-accurate. :pac:

Just because you have a good reason, that doesn't disprove my sweeping generalisation.

I'm having an LCD TV replaced right now for ghosting (!) because I made the mistake of thinking "Oh it's just LCDs coming down in price". When I think the truth is that there's a market for shoddy cheap displays, with people who either don't notice or don't care.
Just look at what manufacturers can get away with, with their dead/stuck pixel policies... if there were distracting purple dots on the windscreen of a new car, you'd expect a discount.
It just wrecks my head that people are willing to accept such shíte... meanwhile I can't buy a CRT anywhere because nobody buys 'em. Instead I have to read LCD reviews where people are going "...wow, it's almost as good as a CRT!".

I've been staring at mine for about the last 5 years... I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a gfx card, but if it's not something you're going to replace every 18 months, it can be worth getting a good one.

    It can be.
But all i would say to the people who are going to buy one. Make sure u know what your going to be using it for when u get your S-IPS display (gaming/Photshop or what ever) some (maybe even a-lot) S-IPS are not good at all for gaming while using photoshop/graphic design/3d ect its perfect and is far better then a TN panel.

Here is another good all rounder S-IPS display. U prob could get it €50 cheaper at another site. As u can see they are not cheap and its only the 22inch im looking for more 24 but cant afford them :(

I would argue that your "sweeping generalisation" is not that people have low standards. Rather they have no need and would see no benefit from a PVA or an IPS panel. And I'm talking about businesses here as well as the general public. Those high-end panels are well known to be invaluable to gamers, photo/film editors, graphics designers etc. Then you have the secretaries, stock brokers, and people who mainly use their PCs for web browsing/documents. There's just six examples, off the top of my head, of people who work on computers quite regularly(IMO). Fot the latter, I don't see how their productivity could increase from a more expensive montior.

    Syntax hightlighting, pfffft!

Yeah totally agree with knowing your needs.
Although I find my S-IPS fine for gaming... even competitive FPS... maybe I got lucky.

Yeah granted on the business users, but the LCD TV thing still bothers me, since they're home entertainment devices where picture and sound quality are central to the experience... it just indicates to me a trend of people not being bothered by crap quality TVs... and by extension, LCD monitors.

AFAIK there's several different technologies wedged in under the IPS banner. The Hitachis are very good but suffer extreme lag; they're really only designed for Photoshop and DTP etc. IIRC the newer LG panels include TN-style refresh boosters to give them much better apparent refresh rates.

I think it's good value, I have one on the way, you get to try it out and if you're not happy just phone Dell and they'll take it back under your 7 day cool off. The premium for top spec panels is just not worth it for me.
