The late late show

It's not that late is it? I mean it's on kinda late, but not nearly late enough to justify two "late"s.
When I was a kid, watching the Toy Show, it felt really late - "late late", if you will. But presumably this show wasn't originally produced by a six year old. So there's no real excuse for a room full of middle aged men to decide that a show beginning at half nine, and lasting two hours, was so far beyond the boundaries of lateness, it needed an extra "late" in the title.
"The late show" would have been better, or maybe even just "The Show".

Sorry for this thread; it's early early and i haven't had any coffee.

Strangely enough I was thinking about this the other day too. I think it should just be "The Late Show".

    Real reason

When it first broadcast, The Late Late Show was on quite late, (in tv terms)

No, that would be Ryan Puberty :)

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

there are numerous other shows that are called that though... David letterman for example (I know, I know, we're not in the states!!) and I think it makes it stand out.

also, if you ask someone "Did you see the late late?" it sounds fine and makes sense, whereas "Did you see the Late?" doesn't sound right and is like "eh.. the late what now?" and "DId you see the Late Show?" is a bit of a mouthful imo!

    just my 2c

Maybe there's a case for some reverse engineering. Put the godawful waste of money on at about 2am. The audience is practically comatose anyway so it'll make no discernible difference to them.

Would it not have to be the early early show then??

but you just know whatever its replaced with will be worse

To justify the name of 'The Late Late Show' - you'd really be expecting a bit of this..

    A bit of this. ;)

Both Late and Show are 4 letter 1 syllable words, how is "did you see the late show" any more of a mouthful that "did you see the late late"??

Only if you are hard of thinking, another example like above would be

    "did you see The Wire??"

    "where?"

    "On the TV"

"At the back of the TV??"

    "No the Baltimore cop show"

    This argument is RETARDED

In all fairness, it is quiet late when you take into account the average age of the viewers.

    The Late Late show

Definition of the first late.................... "Having died recently"
Definition of the second late............... "Far advanced toward the end or close"

Exactly. 'Back in the day' RTE would shut down for the night at about 11.35pm so Late Late Show would be the last program shown that night.
