    I need some sort of short term solution to cook/heat water .Anyone know where I can buy an electric two ring plate that can be just plugged in as needs be?

    What about this in Argos ?

    We have a small gas version of this that we use if the ESB cuts out. It's here. It's extremely handy.

    Yeah, I'd go gas for your back up if you have electricity, or vice versa.
    A one or 2 burner camping stove is good.
