i always thought a drink helped.... key word "a" drink, no more than that.

It's best to avoid alcohol IMO. OP, it might sound simple and basic, but slow, deep breathing immediatly before going on stage, and during the gig, whenever possible, can help to relax you.

    Good luck.

If it's your first gig, the crowd won't know what the words are supposed to be, anyway ;)

Having some nerves is natural. I'd be more worried if you were as cool as a cucumber. Once you're able to run through your setlist in rehearsal without problems you should be okay on stage. Having never done it myself I don't know if it would work but you could try bringing a printout of the song lyrics and having a quick read through before you get on stage.

Best of luck with it anyway!

Reminds me of one time when a band that were supporting us were playing their first gig. They were nervous, so decided to do a load of coke.

They were onstage for over 50 mins and only played 4 songs, due to the rest of the time being used trying to figure out how to tune the guitars.

So have one drink, no more. I recommend one that would help sooth the throat, such as guinness

Make sure your well rehearsed. On stage nerves last about 1 or 2 songs. Then die down.

Do a good sound check ensuring you can hear the instruments that you get your notes from be it bass or guitar or both.

    Best of Luck

Don't do speed as you don't want to end up like Spud from Trainspotting...

I have had this problem myself as I used to just play guitar and have had to start singing recently due to lack of singers available in this country.
The only thing I can say is get lots of practice in and then on the night just forget about it, dont bring lyrics or anything that will cause you to over analyse the situation, if you have done the practice then muscle memory will take over and guide you through it is amazing how you will just sing a lyric without thinking about it.
I would not recommend having any cold drink before you go on as it tightens the vocal chords, if you have a pint then have water (without ice) or best of all tea! before you go on or bring it on with you, (might not want to bring a cupa on stage with you though?)

I sing, I forget lyrics constantly. If you're playing in a good cover band and playing tunes that people want to hear most of the crowd in a pub won't notice the odd slip, I'd say I do it 3-4 times a gig. If you are really unsure of a certain song people will forgive you for reading the lyrics. But just for one song, wouldn't do it for the whole set list. When I started I used to keep a folder with all the lyrics in order of the set list with me, never used it but it was a comfort to know it was there.
