Torches, the way of the future for .22lr rimfire and shotgun lamping?

It's not often I'm impressed. Mostly because I'm a cynical cranky type :D I was loitering with intent on another site lately, when I came across a thread where lads were out bunny bashing and foxing with a bit of success. Naturally I had a nosey about and saw they were only using a torch, no big lamp, no big battery. A small torch shorter but fatter than a cold chisel, running on two CR123A batteries. So I asked after it and one of the guys claimed you could reliably identify foxes eyes out to 250 yards, and reliably identify the animal by it's body at around 100-120 yards.

I like my shotgun. I admit it doesn't get used much :o The thought struck me, that torch, and a half dozen rechargeable batteries, yes, I'm liking this :D

I took it for a test run tonight. I reckon it'll do all that guy claimed and then some. Even if it wasn't to be used for hunting, it makes a hell of a back up/emergency flashlight.

I got the cool white model with the smooth reflector.

I did yeah. I won't be using it on my .223, and I'm still waiting on my cocked up HMR license to be returned. But, it's the business for anyone using a shotgun at night, and having had a .22lr myself I can't see it having any problems out to 100 yards with a good scope*. Get a few rechargeable batteries with that and you've the full nights lamping and no backache :D

Should mention that it's a different kind of light to the Lightforce most of us would use/have seen. It's whiter and not as focused.

Head over to candlepower forums and have a look at the LED section.
Mindblowing stuff not to mention wallet draining as well.

It looks to be a powerful little torch from the pics on the bottom of that link...does it give a good run time on a fresh set of battery's john?
Seems to make more sense than mounting a big 300m beam striker to the barrel of a shotgun!

I have something like this for my 22lr a Surefire Weaponlight. Good to about 100m max but haven't got out to use it much in the field. It has a 1" body and I have a figure of 8 scope adaptor to mount it to a scope.

They reckon 2 hours on Turbo and 14 hours on normal light. You'd need Turbo for hunting. I would expect that claim to be ever so slightly hyped. But, buy some rechargeable batteries and a good charger and it won't make any odds.

Was looking at some of the surefire torches for my 22. There's a few longer models available that have more batteries and I presume more run time. I wonder is the extra weight and price worth it for extra time tho?

I've been using a two D cell mag light these past few years with an LED bulb it will light up a foxes eyes at 400 yards plus, you will easily be able to make out the foxes body at 150 yards and it only cost 40 euros only draw back is you have to get used to holding the mag on the fox while putting the gun on him
    you get better with practice

John, how exactly does this mount to a rifle and scope setup? From what I can see in the pictures on there website, you would need a picatinny rail on either the rifle or attached to the scope somehow. Is this correct? Any pictures?

I have the Led Lenser P7, great little light out to about 120 yds. Kind of regret i didnt go for the P14 or P17 for the extra throw though and the cost was little extra. I have to say I'm pleased though at the power to size ratio as the P14 is bigger as is the P17. Definitely believe these are the way of the future as John says. Would love to get my hands on an X21... in size comparison to mine, it must have unbelievable range. It's not so heavy either so defo the next purchase on my shooting list. Oh and the other advantage of these is the runtime and option of using rechargeables if need be:cool:
Ps. forgot to mention that i got the gunmount with it and a prssure switch which is handy to save runtime and can be used between the teeth, they did say that it could be used between the lips but unless yes have lips like Angelina Jolie or a vice-grips forget it. :D

    OldEyes.

You won't need a rail, if, you buy another scope ring, and source some bit of metal which the supplied ring could attach to. Alternatively there is another strap type mount available from another site, haven't got the link to hand right now but I can find it for you if you'd like.

Just spent most of the evening completely rebuilding my lamp. Post up about those fun and games later on... Think I'll head out now.

Thanks John, no need for the link. I think I'm going to go with this one instead. Looks a bit more powerful and versatile.

Good man John! I only twigged the first part saying 110 lumens, somehow missed the part about 220 on high beam. I'll probably leave out the mount kit and go with something like this instead.

NcStar Tactical Flashlight/Laser Scope Tube Mount

Or, get the kit and use the NcStar as the attaching point for the rail adapter. (i.e. cut off the top ring)

    Decisions, decisions.

New toy to play with, that's a good thing :D I looked at the light you posted, saw the 200 lumens and had a mini heart attack when you said it was more powerful lol.

Must admit I bought mine mostly for the shotgun :)
