    "Big Freeze" Activity 20th December 2009 - 8th January 2010


    Civil Defence has been mobilised in parts of the country worst affected by the freezing temperatures and snowfall since the third week of December 2009.

    The following is a summary of Civil Defence activities in the worst affected areas up to Friday 8th January 2010:

    Offaly Civil Defence recovered three Italian Tourists from abandoned vehicles in the
    Sliabh Bloom Mountains. Volunteers also provided a back-up service to the HSE,
    transporting Public Health Nurses on their calls throughout the county.

    The Wexford Civil Defence Ambulance assisted the HSE since the commencement of the freezing temperatures. Civil Defence Four Wheel Drive Vehicles have been used to transport Council Essential Services Maintenance staff. Civil Defence Officer attended Emergency Meeting to plan for worsening conditions at the weekend.

    Mayo Civil Defence transported a casualty to Hospital for the Ambulance Service.

    Kilkenny Civil Defence was called to a road accident by the Ambulance Service. Kilkenny Civil Defence has also been part of the Severe Weather Warning Coordination Group in the county. Kilkenny Civil Defence Ambulance activated by Wexford Ambulance Control. 24 hour Emergency Services phone line being manned by Kilkenny Civil Defence. Transported Local Authority Senior Engineers throughout the county.

    Laois Civil Defence transported District Nurses on their calls around the County. Rescue Assistance was provided to people in the Sliabh Blooms. At the request of Ambulance
    Control, Senior Nurse transported from Ballylinan to Portlaoise Hospital. Old Age Pensioner in Vicarstown moved from his home, which was without water or heating.

    Leitrim Civil Defence erected ‘danger thin ice’ signs at frozen lakes and rivers. Transported Community Nurse to patients in isolated locations. Four Wheel Drive vehicles were used to transport Council Waterworks Caretakers.

    Longford Civil Defence assisted in the delivery of ‘Meals on Wheels’. On Standby for transportation of District Nurses on their calls.

    Roscommon Civil Defence transported Public Health Nurses on calls throughout the
    County.

    South Tipperary Civil Defence recovered a HSE Ambulance, which left the road on route to the hospital.

    Donegal Civil Defence delivered ‘Meals on Wheels’ to local communities. Four Wheel Drive
    Vehicles were used to transport home support workers to patients. Donegal Civil Defence was also on stand by to assist the Ambulance Service.

    Dublin City Civil Defence Four Wheel Drive Vehicles assisted the Fire Service.

    Kerry Civil Defence transported Public Health Nurses on their calls throughout the
    county.

    Carlow Civil Defence assisted the Gardaí with Traffic Control. Transported people to
    isolated due to adverse weather to clinic appointments etc.

    Sligo Civil Defence on standby for Ambulance Service. Placed on Standby by HSE to assist with community services.

    Kildare Civil Defence on standby to transport Nurses attached to the Curragh Hospice to homes of patients.Assisted with ‘Meals on Wheels’ in Celbridge and Straffan areas.

    Clare Civil Defence placed on standby to assist with transportation of patients to
    clinics.

    Limerick County Civil Defence assisted family isolated in Toornafulla. Transported District Nurses on their calls throughout the county.

    Waterford City Civil Defence assisted in the delivery of ‘Meals on Wheels’. On standby to provide assistance to the HSE.

    North Tipperary Civil Defence on standby to provide transport to Shannon Doc.

    Cavan Civil Defence on standby to bring nurses and medicines to people if required in west Cavan.
