Can phones be registered to the wireless network?

I have a Nokia E71 phone which is wifi enabled.

I was registering it on sit.ucc.ie to use it online, but noticed that the phone's operating system is not an option on one of the dropdown menus. (it's only Windows, Mac, Linux etc.)

So as the thread title says, can I still register it for use on the campus network?

I just hope the guys in the computer centre can set the phone up.

I do have a Mac Address and anti-virus stuff etc.

    Cheers :D

I went to register my Nokia N95 on the wireless network but they told me at the helpdesk that they currently only support iPhones.

Pretty sure you can. Its goin to have to be registered to access the network anyway, so they should be able to connect it. Just ask one of the lads behind the desk in the computer lab, if anyones gonna know...

My understanding is they wont help you but it may be done.

*#getmac# and assume its a linux computer. Its PSK2-enterprise encription look throught the online guides and see if you can get it to work

My iPod Touch is connected, but for some reason it never picks up the signal.

But anyway, you can register one laptop and one handheld device.

Nokia can't be registered as their OS has no wireless setting built in for WPA2-Enterprise,Which is the username/password log on method they used instead of giving you the WEP key..Or atleast my Nokia N95-8gb doesn't support it..

Also is the Ipod touch 2nd Gen with 3.1.2 firmware supported on the wireless?

Well I've the 2nd gen as well, but it has software 2.0 so I'm not really sure.

Yeah. My N82 dosen't support it either, same hardware as n95. A lad told me at the start of the year that they even contacted nokia to try get a solution but no joy..

Ah well, Id just be on Fring the whole time during lectures if it did work. But it would be dead handy for m.boards.ie! PAYG data ain't cheap after all.

I've a nokia 5800 which does support wpa2, but when i asked to get connected they said theyve only ever been able to connect iphones. I registered the phone, and they helped me a bit to try to get it to work as theres no reason it shouldnt work, but we had no luck in the end, and i spent hours trying to get it to work.

WPA2 is pretty different to the enterprise version..I think

Im no expert on the subject myself but as far as i know the 5800 supports wpa2 enterprise, just googling it gives people with the phone trying to connect to university wireless, and the problem is which settings to use, not a lack of support from the phone.

Oh right Was going to google it but on my iPod touch, I'd assume they have some weird setting on the network maybe...I spent atleast two hours trying to set up mine with and without the wireless registration people,But mine doesn't support WPA2 enterprise..

They should be able to get it working but TBH they aren't the best...I spent well over an hour entering my username and password which I wasn't typing is wrong just to find out the fella doing it forgot to allow my MAC address on the network..

Yeah they seemed to have an attitude of if you dont have an itouch/iphone we cant help you conntect to the network and you have to try it yourself.

Unfortunately the only mobile device that works is the iPhone / iPod Touch (2nd gen and up), the wireless system is WPA2 enterprise which is supported by all phones mentioned above however none of them work on the network.

That's certainly not from lack of trying either - there has been no luck getting any other mobile device working.

    Thanks for the replies :D

I did a bit a research about my phone and it does support the PSK Enterprise access, but it's hidden within the phone's configuration menus. Those menus are hidden from the phone's uder.

So if I could find a way to make the menu's visible, there's a chance it could connect to the UCC network. . . hopefully :D

Now to use Google for a while. . .

I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree. It's WPA2 Enterprise - 802.1X not PSK (private shared key - this is where you type in a password) - you need to log in with your student number and password. Trust me it doesn't work.

I went down yesterday to register my Ipod touch 2nd gen 3.1.2 firmware,I went to the tech helpdesk first and was told I needed to update the firmware,A bit confused as It automatically checks when I sync my ipod which is quite a lot.

He then told my friend that they now register laptops in the first boole basement computer room..I asked them there can they register Ipods on the network and they said yes,So they set it up,I was told again I needed the latest firmware and I said I'll update it when I get home. After quite a while (They are not easy to register on the network by the look of it!) it finally got connected just to be told safari doesn't work and I've need a third party browser,That was OK but when I tested it again about 20 mins later,Safari wasn't working,Then a Prompt came up asking me to accept a certificate and I did and safari worked?

    I'm happy anyway.. :)

Hello, will the Iphone 3gs work on UCCs wifi network? i read on forum ucc that the college's wireless network won't support this version except in the WGB.

Hello, will the Iphone 3gs work on UCCs wifi network? i read on forum ucc that the college's wireless network won't support this version except in the WGB.

I'll be able to tell you some time in Septembre is no one else replies, I'll be registering mine then.

I think it will work but on main campus you need a third party browser to use the internet as there's an issue with safari( they might resolve this as it seems UCC is becoming more iPhone friendly, they're possibly changing to gmail and collegeroad are releasing an SU App ) this might be the persuading nudge to sort out the main campus network.

WGB supports it also, and this allows safari to work perfectly on the network.

Just a note I'm talking about my experiences using an iPod touch 2nd Gen running the 3.1.3 OS, With the release of iOS4 this might sort out the issues. Or create more.
