Just want to know of my PSU is up to the job of powering a GTS 250 (EVGA, or another one I forget)

I bough the JCP case with the 500 Watt PSU with it

Deano was telling my last night i'll need to upgrade my PSU before I get a new card, but I just wanted a few others opinions

    There's 4 molex left unused, and a 5Pin (I think it's a 5Pin) I don't know If that helps at all...

I would agree with Deano,a 500w cheap brand PSU may not be enough imo and frankly you should never use cheap psu's full stop.

Though that myself, was hoping i would get away with it tho :(

Anyway, need suggestions for a PSU (Dean said the corsair 450 watt will do just about) i really dont want to be splashing out on a 70 quid or more PSU, Cheaper the better for me, and i also need a graphics card

Budget around 150 (Try use komplett, hardwareversand Shipping price is horrible)

    Cheers :)

Need to know more bout your pc. How many hard drives, do you overclock or do you plan to, basically throw up your specs and maybe add in what you might be adding soon.

Other than that, you are better off spending the money to get a good psu rather than getting a cheap one. A cheap PSU that is rated at 500w may actually only give you 380W reliably (depends really) and if it decides to go you might be lucky and just need a new PSU but some people have been more unlucky and lost a whole lot more i.e. mobo, graphics cards, etc.

I don't suppose you could tell me the ratings of the PSU on the sticker on its side? And what connectors it gives you? Molex, SATA, PCIe...

AFAIK the OEM for the case is Jet/Xilence so it'd make sense if the PSU was a low-end HEC jobbie. Not great but it could probably hit its ratings - just. I need to see what 12V power it can supply before I pass judgement...

No overclocking at all, no interest in it

    1 HDD, One DVD-ROM, AMD Athlon II X3 435 2.9GHz, Stock cooler

there's two SATA, 4 Molex, one 5Pin (I think its 5 pin) one 25 pin motherboard, one CPU Power,

I'll get a pic up in a few mins of the PSU

PICT0404.jpg best pic i could get, text photo type wasnt letting me put it on my PC for some reason...

Does that really say 28.0A on +12V

If so then you could drag 336W out of that thing if you had to...

Should be okay so long as you don't do anything completely mad with it...

And what's that 5-pin connector about? No PCIe? You'd then need a Molex>PCIe adaptor to run the GTS250.

See Fiddy, I told ya you could get a better pic :P

    @ Solitaire : its either 26 or 28 amps.Thats just barely enough (GTS250 requires 24 amps IIRC) I wouldn't risk it IMO

    It's 28.0A
lol yeah I got new battery's but the text format wasn't saving was very clear with it ?
I think I might just risk it for a month or less until I can get a new one

also there's two molex to PCIe or something adaptor with the card

Guy won't hold onto it for me... How about a low consuming card?

Just get a good power supply, even a cheap corsair 400-450W if money is tight.

You try anything dodgy on the PSU front and it will come back to bite you without fail: random blue screens/power outs and/or a random selection of parts get fried.

Why are you trying to skimp on one the most critical parts for your PC?

Because i wasn't after a PSU only a new graphics card...

The low power cards (ie: no power connectors) tend to be crap :o

    Say what?!

I'm pretty sure a GTS250 doesn't need 284W... even a GTX299 (MARS) would barely need that (and its two GTX285s sandwiched!)

IIRC a GTS250 needs ~80W or so, which is <7A. A HD4770 needs around 4A, maybe 5A if tortured. Same for a HD5750, although it uses a bit less than 4A under normal 3D gaming (still hits 5A in FurMark). The CPU won't exceed 8A (and only that 0.1% of the time) unless OCd. System and fans won't take too much, its not a very fancy build with stacks of cooling and drives coming out of its eyeballs. So 28A is more than reasonable. I just wouldn't go much above 20A if at all possible with such a cheap PSU, is all.

True but without a half dacent PSU in the first place you can't upgrade to a good gfx card. The two are always tied together. Plus good PSUs don't sound like cement mixers and help reduce noise, if noise is a concern.:D (and don't fry all your parts on a whim....)

Would look at a Radeon 5770. You would prob get away it on the present PSU with your current build. Good card and low power. (Even the GT250 you will prob get away with really, my brothers run a core2duo rig with the older 8800GT on a 350W FSP PSU. Suprised it hasn't caught fire yet, PSU now sounds like a cement mixer through hard use though)

Op how much can you spare to invest in a good PSU? Remember a decent PSU is one of the most future proof items in your PC :)

This PSU actully isn't load at all :O was shocked enough by that, but i don't care about the noise it make's really
I wouldn't mind upgrading my PSU shortly after getting the card (Month or less even)

I saw this card aswel, any good? Club3D 9800GT Green Edition?

I believe they slowed that card down to make it less nom nom nom on the power.

9800GT's aint the best in the first place.Try and find a used 9800GTX if you can.Basically a GTS250 on a larger die.Its much more available second hand though

I donno, i don't fancy buying one second hand :/

whats bad about that card anyway? like the main game i want to run is Call of Duty 4 (Altho i willl run others)

It was a refresh of the 8800GT and they then did a slight revision that was a bit smaller and eat less power and labeled it a GT250

so 8800GT = 9800GT = GT250! (ATI are pretty brutal for "launching" cards as well....)

It's a good card for under €100 but above €100 you can pickup a 4870 or 5770 for around the same money which are a nice bit faster in most games.

    its 8800GTX -> 9800GTX (more shaders/higher clock IIRC) -> GTS250 (Smaller die (55nm) and only a single 6pin PCIE connector,also phsyically smaller PCB)

:confused::confused: English Please :P sould i get it?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Please remind me why you don't want a HD5750 again?

    I wouldn't touch a high-TDP card like a 8800GTX/9800GTX+ with that PSU.

The GTS250 is a faster version of the above, but as its 55nm rather than 80nm or 65nm it uses far less power. The HD5750 is better still and is a 40nm part, so it uses eff-all power :) Indeed, I'd recommend hanging on until you can get a cheap HD57x0, then upgrade the PSU, then overclock the HD57x0 (something they're good at ;))

    Did I say I didnt want a HD 5750? I can't remember ! So I can get a HD 5750 and I don't have to upgrade my PSU yet?

Once you have the money for one, yeah :) They need eff-all juice and shouldn't try to write any cheques the PSU can't cash, plus they're very OCable once you do get a better PSU; meanwhile you won't need to upgrade the graphics for a good while after! :D

Can't remember why you wanted a GTS250 in the first place... must be getting old :o

There only 100-150 on komplett? Or am I looking at the wrong cards?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Sounds right. HD5750s were under €100 at one point but are now hanging around €110. HD5770s are usually over €140, have seen the odd offer down closer to €120.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭Mister Man

    Club3D HD5750 Noiseless Edition, 1024MB... A good choice??

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Passive ones will probably be underclocked and very expensive. Avoid.

Although where are looking at that card? Komplett no longer stock them - and their index has messed itself. Again. Keep getting non-existant entries  I see HD5750s there from €117 and HD5770s from €143. Pixmania has them cheaper at the moment - a HD5750 for under €95 and a HD5770 for under €129.

I dont really plan on OCing but yeah it was a bit overpriced

The HD5750 look's good to me, will my PSU power it for now yeah?

43W under heavy load, 60W under torture. Methinks yes ;) Just make sure you have an unused Molex to plug the included PCIe adaptor lead into!
