    Howdy,

Picking up relative's car this weekend that hasn't been driven in a while and tax is out of date (NCT is fine) and has no insurance disc. My insurance covers me to drive a car other than the car named under my policy 3rd party. Am I ok to collect the car at the weekend? Wont get another chance for months and can sort out tax next week.

    Any help appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Gumby.

Tell the (enivitable) cop on the checkpoint you've just bought it and will be taxing it soon ?
You're throwing yourself on their mercy so it depends on the cop.
20 percent of them will do you for it on the spot in my experience

OR Having the bottom half of a change of ownership slip
in the tax disc provides protection against all but the most pedantic
    of the cops.

The bottom line is, how lucky do you feel? FWIW, I think you'd have to be quite unlucky to get done for it.

Hey thanks guys, not so worried about the cops (happy to take chances there) but will the insurance co pay out in the event of an accident or will they tell me I'm not covered?

Insurance is nothing to do with tax, and vv, so I'd say yes, your cover would be the same regardless of whether the car was taxed or not.

    Your insurance will be unaffected.

Apols if mentioned above or you have done so already, but double check with your insurer that your coverage to drive another car using the 3rd part insurance does not require that car to have it's own insurance policy. I've seen some that do.

+1 on that.... have seen that bite people a few times as well......

but tax has no effect on insurance...

+2. I think this is where "open drive" and "other cars extension" kicks in

Erm, if you could drive any car without insurance for third party... wouldn't everyone be insuring some sh1tbox worth nothing and then driving their other uninsured car?

I'm pretty sure that open drive policies cover only other insured vehicles otherwise there'd be a crapload of people abusing the system like they used to.

Just ring up in advance and tell them to switch over your insurance for the day?

I wouldn't worry about the tax so much because in the worst case scenario you'll face a fine.
If you get caught without insurance or you get into an accident without insurance... well you're finances will change dramatically!

Crucial point is that the cars have to have different owners for third party extension to be valid. Most insurance companies also exclude cars owned by spouses or partners.

A quick point i renewed my insurance with axa early dec they said that my full comp covers me in any car i dont own no matter what its worth,i asked the one in the office to check it out,she said "full comp goes with me into any other car but my car is uninsured while i am driving said car, also named drivers on my car are also uninsured at the time"

IN every case ive seen, the other car must be owned by someone else and have its own valid policy in force. You will only be 3rd party also.
So in te OPs case, he is not insured as the car hasnt got a current policy on it to allow his extension to carry over to it.
Only option is to transfer his own policy over fully onto this car for a day. I wouldnt be overly worried about the tax in this case

That's a pretty decent deal to be fair. However, as I said and as mickdw says, the car must have an active policy or you're not actually insured on the other car at all under the open drive (or your insurance company's equivalent) policy.
