I was part of an accident today but I was not hit & no damage. Guards only took my name as possible witness & did not require licence or insurance details. Do I need to contact my insurance company?

Unless damage was caused to you or your vehicle or you caused damage to someone or their vehicle then no you need not contact your insurance company :)

How could you be in an accident without either an impact or damage?

No. You weren't involved in an accident. You just happened to see it happen.

Lets just say one of the other cars was trying to avoid me.

If you were illegally parked, blocking a junction, on wrong side of road etc then you could be held responsible for accident. In saying that if the circumstances of why the other car had to avoid yours, and thus caused an accident in doing so, was at fault and you weren't a cause or contributing factor to the cause of accident then you need not notify you're insurance company. The more details we have about the accident the better advice we can give you McSpud.

Coming out of side road I could not stop on the solid ice so I slid across the road. The 2nd car on the main road could not stop in time to avoid me (technically I would on the correct side of the road at that stage) & in effort to avoid me he swerved back towards the road I came out of. At that stage a 3rd car hit the 2nd car (3rd car probably just on his own stop line).

Guards came & said taking my name as possible witness.

did this 3rd car come from the main road behind the second one or from the side road behind you? I'd inform your insurance company, sounds like a pickle and i'm willing to bet the 2nd car will want to blame you since you slid in front of him  if the road wasnt gritted then it could be one of many cases where people will be telling councils to cough up!

    3rd car came behind me.

Even though the 3rd car almost did nothing wrong (its a real grey area if he was stopped before or after the stop line) he actually did the 2nd car.

There is absolutely he way it was gritted. Solid ice, could not even break if by smacking with my heel. Council road too close to city.

best to ring insurance company even if guardaí didnt take your insurance details etc, explain you hit sheet ice, slid into a road, a car swerved to avoid you and in doing so he crashed.

Cheers. I have the other guys details too.

Think I will stick to main roads in future. On most roads stopping distance is reduced so can test when no traffic around but never had so little control - if the ice a little thicker could skate on it. :(

Same thing happened me and my dad last night, coming down a slight gradient in 1st, wasn't slowing enough so gentle on brakes and she wouldn't stop. Luckily it was a quiet road and late enough as we were coming back from Beaumont Hospital. Still it'd help if he wasnt driving a 500 tonne trajet

On reflection I was very lucky. If I was hit by other cars would have still been minor but if pedestrian was walking across would not have been good at all even at slow speed.

On the ice brakes make no difference as weight of car kept me sliding. If there was 200m of ice I think it would have been 200m skid. Insane. :(
