What would happen if we were to get the same weather as Britain?
Salt supplies set to run out on Sunday
    08/01/2010 - 09:10:22

Ireland's local authorities could start to run out of salt in just two days time - with more severe weather forecast from Sunday.

Many schools remain closed again today, and public transport is being curtailed as the country struggles with the ongoing cold snap.

The government's emergency response committee is expected to hear from the National Roads Authority later on the efforts to get more salt and grit for the roads.

Temperatures in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow this morning reached -13.7 degrees Celcius.

Another biting frost has led to treacherous conditions where ice failed to clear yesterday.

The Government has conceded that Ireland will next week receive only half the amount used this week - and some supplies could run out in two days' time.

This could force the NRA and local authorities in making tough decisions about what roads to keep open - and what roads to close.

Met Éireann is warning that from Sunday, there is an increased risk of significant accumulations of snow again in the east, and for the first time, in the south.

It's like the ice age in Britain at the moment.

Temperatures might start increasing from Monday onwards so it might not be too bad next week.

Would putting grit ontop of the roads not help at all?

Isn't there a first cousin of a Fianna Failer up in Monaghan where they used to store all the voting machines. We could put them all there....

Indeed what we need is a EU road storage subvention scheme - an Asphalt mountain.

Nah - prevention is better than cure - all roads should be upgraded to include underfloor heating!

In Iceland some roads and footpaths have these from the heat off the volcanoes!

I think after Sunday if the expected weather hits, the place is going to be at a standstill for the week.! Getting a weeks worth of supplies in today.

If Dublin gets anything more than another 2 inches, I'd say everything outside the canals will shut down, even if the temperature does pick up a bit.

They're using inmates from some prisons about the UK now to clear snow. Course here, the health and safety nazis wouldn't allow it.
