    hi,
just setting up my first extender and having some difficulties, i guess...

    my setup is as follows
windows 7 media centre in front room
    router beside media centre
windows 7 ultimate pc upstairs in bedroom 2 acting as a server (all video files except recorded tv are on this machine)
xbox 360 in bedroom 1 acting as extender
everything is hardwired to the router with cat 5 cables.

when i load an xvid via the 360 from the video library in the extender software i get a little bit of stuttering then plays fine (with maybe a frame dropped here and there)
when i play an mkv i get loads of stuttering and evetually freezes or crashes the xbox.

in the 7mc downstairs i have video library setup using the full server adddress \\media-7-server\videos

can anyone advise where i should be looking in my setup?

Check CPU utilization on the "server" when the Xbox360 is playing the files. They are not streamed raw, they are transcoded to a format the Xbox360 likes, then streamed. Transcoding a 1080p mkv on the fly is going to be hard on even the beefiest CPU.

Another possibility is a network bottleneck on the server end. You should have a 1Gb card in there, connected to a switch that has a 1Gb port of course. Keep the clients at 100Mb/s however.
