I was abroad there a couple of months ago where I rented a car. I since recieved speeding fines from Hertz. Two fines from Italy and one in Switzerland.

I am wondering should I pay these or will they just go away.

Does anybody ever have the same situation and what did they do ?????

    Any input would be great

I'd imagine that if you don't, they would be able to bill the card you used for hiring the car - in fact, I'm surprised they just didn't do that anyway.

Somehow, I doubt they'll go away as Hertz have probably had to pay them on your behalf, and they'll want their money back.

Hertz have nothing to do with speeding fines. If you look at any car rental contract, it always clearly says fines are your problem. All Hertz (or any company) can do is forward tickets to you or give local police your details. Then, it is between you and that police.

Most EU countries have no agreements that would allow fines to be enforced abroad. If you are never planning to go to Italy or Switzerland again, you could get away with just not paying (if there is no agreement between Ireland and these countries, that is). But should you ever find yourself entering one of these countries and your passport get scanned, oops, you now have a problem. So think carefully about whether you want to risk it. You never know, there could be some random chance that takes you to Italy twenty years down the road... Also, there is talk every once in a while of drafting some agreement that would make fines fully enforceable across the EU. If that ever comes into power, unpaid tickets from abroad might come back and haunt you.

Many car rental companies will bill your credit card an administration fee for passing on your details to the authorities.

I got clocked by a speed camera in Stuttgart last year. Budget Car Rental gave my address to Stuttgart Council, and billed me €25 euro for doing so. Now I keep getting letters in German which appear to be asking for more money each time. :(
