    How easy or common is it to request a diagnostic test such as a colonoscopy from a GP,as I really feel I need one, but the suggestion has not been forthcoming? I am not a private patient......

    I don't see why not -- Your GP will probably see if they can assess you themselves first, however if its further examination you want, then your GP should make any arrangement possible to accommodate you.

    You could also try phoning the hospital and make an appointment with a specialist in that area or simply ask the receptionist whats the procedure.

    You might be better of being referred by your GP though!

    your best bet is to ask your gp if he/she thinks it's indicated in your case.

    if it is, they can refer you.

    most hospitals wont take direct referrals from patients themselves

    not really. if a test or procedure is indicated then fair enough. however, if its a case of the patient wanting an investigation as opposed to needing it, then they have no right to demand it and no right to have it.

    people cant just decide they want procedure x/y/z and have that accommodated irrespective of indication

    That is what I will do - 2 severe bouts of diverticulitis for which I have been hospitalised for 5/6 days each time - all research I have done shows that a colonoscopy is indicated at some point, so I will just make the suggestion. Thanks!

    Ah well,I didn't get round to asking my GP and have just received colonoscopy appointment from the hospital,and am now freaking out, how heavily are you sedated for it, anyone know? I would rather be totally unaware if possible :(
