id like to use mono PROPERLY to check phase , balance , etc .

but how do you acheive mono , is it left and right channell fed into one speaker only
    ( which is what I assume )
ie pan left channell all the way to the right and turn off the left speaker somehow.

or left right combined played over two speakers
left into right out the right speaker and right into left out the left speaker - ( this would appear to double the volume though ?

im confused about volume mainly -
is mono half the volume of stereo or should they be the same volume if checking them

I guess its one speaker , but how to achieve this in a daw easily and quickly and flip back again .

most daws and interfaces have a mono check button on them.

cubas has it in the "control room" section. PT has it on interfaces.

    dunno bout rest of DAWs

Correct mono is L+R routed to just one of your speakers. Stuff that is panned will become louder, the amount depends on the pan law setting in your DAW, this could be 3dB or 6dB, usually. Fully left or right gives the greatest increase when summed to mono.

How was that a stupid question lads? The Beeb takes it seriously, they make their own monitor controllers, one of the functions is to do proper single speaker mono. Have they been stupid for the last 25+ years so?

I would just thank the posts that help and ignore the other people who haven't a clue about helping other human beings and leave them to their lonely lives and cheap shots mate - a very valid question, unfortunately these are public boards and can be frequented by all sorts.

It's nice that some people took the time to reply impartially and invest in quality posts.
