BJJ With a Friend

I've been to two or three BJJ classes in the past few weeks and picked up one or two moves but the class never really thought me the foundations of it. I was thinking of doing a bit of practice at home with a mate, so what do we do? Just go at it and go for submissions? Or maybe look up youtube videos? Obviously going to more classes I'll be able to pick up the moves and learn more but just for now any advice?Cheers

I don't mean to be smart, but how can you possibly assess whether you're being taught the foundations after a few classes? For all you know what you're learning is the foundations.

I see what you're saying. We go through drills every class that involve takedowns and various locks and chokes. So yes, i am being taught the foundations. Let me rephrase it. I'm still a beginner and wish to practice at home with a mate, so are we better off running through moves or just going at it ourselves?

I don't train BJJ but I have trained in submission wrestling as part of MMA. You should consider that you might have started in the middle of a training cycle, which could be a few weeks in length. When the cycle starts over it'll be back to basics.

    It's all good :)

I think as a beginner, you should try to perfect what you're being taught class to class. So if I had an hour, I'd get what I had done in yesterday's class and drill it and practice it live with my mate rather than trawling through youtube. I know it can seem like the unsexy option but probably the best advice I ever got was to "drill until you're sick of it". Also, roll and spar as much as you can, as long as you're getting drilling and technique, you can't do too much of that.

Generally what people do is learn techniques in the class than choke their friends out on the weekends.

I suppose that makes sense! Cheers

when i first started bjj about 6 months ago i was going mad on youtube looking at all the different techniques but you really can't take much from them coz its all about the weight distribution which you feeling when in class or rolling and you just can't see that on videos. little things our instructor shows us really makes the difference when really applying a technique well. having said that i believe someone recently got their blue belt online in some new gracie online course so maybe i'm wrong :D

as roper said you practice what you've been doing in class and things will fall into place eventually

The kids i train always use you tube to learn moves and then tell me they have a new move and show me, there always wrong as the small details are easily missed to the new or inexperienced bjj athlete-in the class these details are easily taught and corrected if wrong..

Do as Roper said and learn stuff in class then drill it to perfection with your mate..
