Ryanair and Aer Lingus sports equipment weight

The stated limit for sports equipment is 20kg for Ryanair and 15kg with Aer Lingus. However, as the oversized baggage machine is not run by either Ryanair or Aer Lingus - has anyone actually had an issue if the item has been heavier then the limit?

Ryanair weighed my golf bag last week before it went to the oversize baggage area in Shannon.

What if the bag is too long to fit on the normal machine :)

Dunno, but with Ryanair I wouldn't be surprised if they refused it. Do they have dimensions in their terms & conditions somewhere?

It's a bag for kitesurfing equipment that I have travelled with before on ryanair. it's very long (1.5m) so it can't really be weighted in the normal area effectively. However, they have changed the weight allowed from 30kg to 20kg so they might start weighing stuff now. With 30 kg I used to pack lots of clothes and stuff in also which saved on bringing another bag. They have also upped the charge recently to €40 each way - the duckers.

They will weight the bag at the checkin/ bag drop desk, stick the tags on it and then send you to the oversized scanner. If that is your only bag then I'd expect them to be looking at the weight of it, if your were checking in another regular hold bag as well then they might not notice.

I think most people were on to this and it is most likely why they reduced the weight allowance - missing out out on the opportunity to charge for a piece of hold baggage.

I just spotted on the Ryanair page that they have changed the baggage allowance from the last time I looked.

It used to be 15kg total checked in regardless of how many bags you had, but you got charged for each item separately as well.

Now it seem to be a maximum of two bags per person, and each of those bags can be 15kg. €15 for the first bag and €35 for the second bag.

    http://www.ryanair.com/en/questions/table-of-fees

Then you could also have another 20kg of sports equipment in another bag for €40 as well which gets you up to 50kg. Good luck with carrying all that though, but just the 30kg in two bags is a pretty huge amount of luggage to be taking on the routes that Ryanair cover.

Myself and my g/f are flying in 2 weeks.

We'll be carrying one board bag (with 2 boards) weighing in at 22kgs
and then a checked bag each which I'd be surprised if they weigh over 10kgs each.
Total weight for 2 people ~42Kg.

Anyone think I'll get stung of carrying the 2nd board?

    Its aerlingus btw

Can you transfer anything from the board bag to the other one as you could get stung with them like that. Sometime the girls on the checkin desk will just add up the total weight which your well within, but if they weight the board bag as seperate then they could get awkward about it.

I could but I'd rather not.
I've 2 boards, 2 pairs of boots, 2 sets of bindings and 2 helmets. The rest if packed with our snowboarding clothes for padding purpose. Her board is brand new so I'm trying to protect it while its in transit.

20kgs is the limit with ski stuff on Ryanair.

I checked mine in at Stansted last week and she was suprised when my ski bag only weighed 9kgs. She was telling me that people stuff the ski bags with clothes. They are wise that people are stuffing the ski bags so dont be suprised if you have to pay for the extra 2kgs on your ski bag.

You have 15kgs of checked allowance along with 10kgs of hand baggage so why not do some shifting around to avoid the extra charges.

Also remember there is no pooling of baggage allowances.
Edit - sorry didnt see it was AL you are flying with. What is their allowance???

I think its 15kg for sports equipment but that seems a bit low for oversized baggage.
    I also this:
    Excess Baggage Fees
    Shorthaul Flights (Ireland/UK/Europe)

    * Excess weight fee is charged for any bag over 20 kgs.

    So I don't know

It would just about have the skis and boots under 15kg I think, but not with anything else in either bag as well.

just wanted to drop in and say, I didn't get charged for any excess weight. The board bag was around 25kg in the end and there was no problem.
