Leaving my job - giving notice

    Hi all,

    Ive recently been offered another job which I am most definitely going to take. Only problem is I have just signed an 5 month contract at my current job. The contract states it is necessary to give a months notice before leaving.

    What would happen if I left without giving the months notice and say just gave a week or maybe 2 weeks notice?

    A month seems very long...

    as far as i know if its withtin the first 6 months of your employment the contract can be term either side with 1 weeks notice.

    Well since you already have another job lined up you probably aren't that concerned with getting a reference from your current job. You may well be burning a bridge though.

    If you can, I'd give them 4 weeks notice. But, if you want out as soon as possible, give 2 weeks notice but you may be kissing that reference goodbye.

    That being said, I know someone who just up and left their job without any formal notice and went traveling. She came back, applied for her job again and got it. She worked in a professional company as well, so I guess it depends on the company and the people.

    Thanks for the replies. My only pickle here now is that I may have already burned a bridge in terms of getting a reference from this place. I have been really pissed off with the job for a while now and had always planned on leaving. Lately my work has been pretty poor and Ive been pulled on it.

    What should I say to the new company if they ask for reference from this job as theres no way it could be a good one. Can I say no and just give them another one?

    Any suggestions are really appreciated.

    A lot depends on the company... (on both sides)..

    If I was asking you for a reference, and you said "No" and offered me another, I would be concerned about what happened at the last company.. On the other hand, I have hired a fair few folks, and not once bothered to ring and check personal references.

    Many companies (mine included) do not give personal references, just a reference that states you worked from date x to date y and you position was Z. A mere confirmation that you worked there, if your current company has a similar policy is matters little what your direct management thinks of you.

    Company policy... concerns over confidentiality (salary, performance, safety and disciplinary actions are confidential and those requests can only be handled by HR) and fairness, we can only report strictly observable measurements as defined in end of year meritocracy.
    We can give slightly more than John joined in April 2001 and left in Dec 2009, but you will not get letters of recommendation etc.
