If you knew then what you know now...

If you suddenly got transported back to 1990 knowing nothing other than what you now know (i.e, you couldn't take a book back with you or do research before travelling back) how fast could you get rich.

So that accomodation/food is not an issue we will say that rather than your physical body being transported back that just your mind is transported into your younger self in 1990 and to keep it interesting lets say everyone starts off with £100.

I thought I would become very rich very fast but am instantly stumped at what I could bet on that I know happened in 1990 or thereabouts. Betting on Manchester United winning the treble would surely raise a tidy sum but that didn't happen until 1999. Equally buying shares in Apple must be a good buy but probably not until the IPOD came out?

I don't expect anyone to remember winning lottery numbers for a certain day and no cheating by looking up facts. This has to be done with only your current knowledge as if you were transported back right now. Potential highest amount of money earned wins...

    I would've chosen 1, 2, 10, 15, 32, 34 as my lotto numbers instead of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

I'd rob all my "friends" in school.

I'd start an online auction site, and call it ebay, and start a social networking site called Facebook. Oh, and start a website on Quake and evolve it into another social networking site - I'd call it faceboards.ie

Put your money on them winning the FA Cup, before Mark Robins scored the goal at Forest on 7 January 1990 (when everyone was baying for Fergie's blood)

In January, I'd stick a bet on Ireland reaching the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup and put the full £100 on it. I imagine the odds were frickin awesome.

With those winnings, I'd find a company called Netscape Communications Corporation in 1995 and buy up as much stock as I possibly could, then sell it off about 2 months later.

    == Win.

Quick calculations - if my £100 bet turned into say £5,000 and I invested that in Netscape, I'd have turned that into £35,000 in two months.

Then I'd use that to buy property. "Selling up" once a year, before selling the final house in mid 2005.

well,in 1990 at most i would have been about a year old,so if my mind was transported into my one year old self,so I think I could probably market myself as the smartest kid in the world. People would pay to see that!might even get my own talk show!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,583 ✭✭✭cloneslad

I'd buy some chocolate, a few bags of crisps, some ice-cream, couple of issues of the dandy and possibly a few football stickers.

I liked being a stupid (and fat) kid, so I would do it all again :p

If I knew then what I know now, maybe I would have been able to stop all the sh!t that's happened in my life, and fixed everything about it, having a happier life.

    1990 with 100 quid.
    its tricky enough.
would have been hard to buy shares with anything less than 10/20k i think..

well qulf war was in 1991 i think might have a bet on that .

& think clinton was elected in 1992 , could have an very early bet on him .

I'd have saved the £100 and then bought Bertie Ahern a ticket to New York around September of 2001, thereby saving everyone the country the equivalent of a million quid each over the next 40 years.....

And ye'd better all be grateful!

em... bet on every major sporting event for the last 20 years that in itself alone should sort you.. everything from the olympics to the superbowl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Write a book predicting major events for the next 20 years. Use the money to print out copies at the local library.

I'd release it in volumes of course to increase sales.

There is a major flaw in my plan though which I'm sure someone here will point out.

I would have started my own brown envelope company. Would have started small and as the company expanded I would have started making larger brown envelopes.

.com url registrations. In the early days the only route a company had for getting their own brandname ".com" off you was to pay you for it.

I'd also start learning everything I could about cgi, perl etc. so I could make a fortune out of web development. Get in at the ground level on the likes of ebay, amazon etc. where early employees all got share options.

Or, if I could make enough money from sports gambling in the first 4 years, get involved in venture capital in the valley in 94 - 96. We already know who's business models survived - they're still here!

Do the lotto three or four times, minimal effort, make a load of money.

What is everyone thinking getting the best job possible? Feck that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭Keen2win

I'd buy the domain name www.sex.com!

Id release an album immediately called "blood sugar sex magic"
bet on most NBA matches and football matches.
during the internet economy crash id buy up as much of the most popular websites nowadays, invest it then in ryanair + move it into housing. and buy all the property where the dundrum shopping center is now.
i would of course move the money out b4 the crash ,
    so .
    maybe.
im responsible for all these crashes.

Ye, I think I read about it in a paper, that's why it came into my head! Some fella went about stealing ownership, wasn't that it?

But, Jesus, imagine thinking of that? He must have been the smartest fella ever! That name would make you hundreds of millions today!

I would go straight into the bookies and say the following:

I want to put £100 on the following result please.

Liverpool - VS - AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League Final.
Liverpool to win on penalties after a 3-3 draw. After going to 3-0 down at half time.
(With a chap that was brutal call Traore in our team :P)

Wonder what kind of odds I would have gotten for that!! Even better odds again when Traore scored that own goal :P

I would've bought £100 of royalties off of Dermot Morgan in his new show he couldn't fund....
