Truck driving (C licence)/ help needed

    Hello Everyone,
I have a small problem and was hoping someone can help me.
I hold a provisional truck driving license (C) since April 2009.
I have my driving test booked for the end of February.
I am based in Limerick. The test will take place in Ennis.
What I really need is a little bit more driving.
So far I have taken10 hours of driving lessons, which cost me a small fortune.
I am trying to find somebody drives a rigid truck for a living
and will be willing to take me on board for a day or two, so I can do a bit of driving under his/her supervision.
I can pay, but the €65 per hour I paid to the driving school is what I can't afford.
If you drive a truck in the Munster region and would like to help me, please let me know.

    Any help appreciated

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't think you're likely to get any offers. It's illegal for anyone other than an Approved Driving Instructor to accept payment for teaching someone to drive. Anyway, you'd have all sorts of trouble with insurance, which would cost you an arm and a leg, and even then, you've to get someone to trust you with a truck that's not dual-control.

Hopefully I'm wrong and you work something out. Either way, best of luck in the test. I've my own coming up next week, by the way.

So far I took five two hour sessions. The truck I drove (proper local school of motoring) was single control I think ( I may be wrong, but I didn't come across any extra pedals by the passenger seat).

All I need is to drive a bit more with someone who has a full licence and a truck.

Best of luck with your test Richie15! Let us know how you got on.

Learning with any registered instructors truck is not dual controlled.

    (well my instructors weren't:confused:)

How will the company know you have taken 10 hours? you could be a beginner who never drove a truck before and trying to pull a fast one.... I don't think you'll get any offers.

    Sorry

Mine is. Well, it's got a brake but no clutch. I suppose at this stage, they take it for granted I can use a clutch! :)

Don't you also need insurance as well?

    Sorry

I have receipts for all the lessons I have taken previously. My point is, that after spending circa €800 on both tuition and fees I would like to get some more driving before the actual test.
As far as I know ( I might be wrong and I don't mind being corrected) it is legal for me to drive a truck accompanied by a fully licensed driver.

If you can help, please let me know.
    I appreciate all replies.

I have a pal who was working and paid for "D" licence lessons himself. He was layed off and went into Fas and they actually refunded him the money back that he had already paid out. and gave him money to do his CPC test

I myself did my C licence test in October. I would suggest relax and lots off observation (both mirrors at the correct time). And Positioning is very important. I was lucky my test route was at 3pm in the day and went passed 5 different schools.......Luckly for me the were on mid-term break.

I went out in the passenger seat a few times with a transport company. you learn alot just watching how things are done.

If you are insured, it is OK.

    Hi exsitingisinit,

I am currently in full time employment, so I don't think that fas would be willing to sponsor me.
    Thanks for your reply.

I got some of my lessons paid for through the" job facilitator" in my local social welfare office. Took a long time to get any money from him though. But I suppose they cant have it too easy:)

Now I have to approach the CPC issue and I'm not quite sure how this works. RSA is giving me misleading info. Does anyone know how this is organised and what the real costs and waiting times for Limerick are?

How much of it have you done? Just the regular non-Professional C licence test?
If that's the case, I think you've to start over, except the Theory Test. But maybe not the driving, I'm not sure.
Can't help you with waiting times, but I know the theory sections they give you a list of dates and you pick your own, and the practical parts are just like the regular driving test.
    1. CPC Multiple Choice €70
    2. CPC Case Studies €70
    3. CPC Driving Test €110
    4. CPC Practical €32
    That's €282 in total.

If you've already gone that far and you're asking about the Periodic Training, that can be anything from €50 to €100. There's no waiting times, as far as I know, you just get in contact with someone who's running a course. Most of the driving schools seem to be starting now, ring around and see what price you can get.

    Hi,

So far I have passed both the thory and driving tests. At this stage I am awaiting my licence to arrive by post.
To my understanding I should now apply for :
    1. CPC Multiple Choice €70
    2. CPC Case Studies €70
    3. CPC Practical €32
Is the CPC organised by the RSA, or is there a different body in charge of it?

It's organised (sic) by the RSA, and the theory tests are provided by Prometric. As far as I know, the CPC Driving test is different to the non-professional one, longer and more comprehensive I think. So you'll have to do that aswell. The only good news is that if you fail, they can't take away your licence.

As Richie15 said I think you'll have to do another Driving Test to get the CPC Qualification along with the above. It's just another money making scam because I did the CPC driving test and it seemed standard enough, all 70 minutes of it!
You'll have no hope of getting work as a driver unless you have it, that's why I can't stress enough for people to do the CPC thing from the start as It saves time and money in the long run.

Just got my full licence by post:D.
The whole CPC looks like a mojor money racket to me. Just another form of taxation.
If there's a practical driving test involved, that means I'll have to hire a truck (€170-250) again:mad:
