    Hi Guys,

I'm travelling to Kilimanjaro and then zanzibar after that in Feb.

I'm trying to find out about the price of injections.

Does anyone know the cost of getting the following injections? I cant find price lists anywhere on-line.

    Polio
    Yellow fever
    Hepatitis A
    Hepatitis B
    Typhoid

    Regards,
    Phil

    Contact them.

I use Travel Health Centre, Part of RCSI on Mercers St. Dublin 2.

    Tropical Medicine Bureau

Some patients may find it cheaper.

I it a large investment and you may consider your first batch to be expensive. But it's good value for money as many of the shots/vaccines last up to a decade.

There will also be a Consultation fee aswell. Which is information on how to avoid getting ill while in the country. That can be €70 alone.

I am sure there are different products being pushed on these clinics and the technology is always changing/improving, from my most recent visits to the Travel Health Centre

    Typhoid - 1 visit - 3 years

Hep A + B - three visits - one year, with a booster after a year for another good bit (either 3 years or more.)
The Hep A + B can come in the same dose. But the three doses are given over a planned period of time. Nearly three weeks for me.

    Yellow Fever - 1 visit - 10 years

    Polio -1 visit - 10 years

    Other vaccines
    Meningitis - 1 visit - 5 years
    Rabies - 3 visits - 3- 5 years
Tetanus - 1 visit - 10 years ( you have this shot previously?)

There was a time people took Gammaglobilin for Chlorea(?) but had to take it as close to departure as possible as it had a short protection period.
Look on the bright side you'll get a lovely WHO issued Yellow Book, with stamps and signatures. It's more for the yellow fever vaccination but carries the other doses aswell.

    Good Luck with the trip

[I don't think I gave any medical advice, just the practicalities of the doses.]

    "Understood"

Thanks a million for that, I got onto the Tropical Bureau and they gave a price for all injections i need plus consultation fee. Very steep but i suppose it needs to be done.
Im going to book an appointment soon and get them done, heading of to Kilimanjaro in Feb so need to get moving.

  • Hi Guys,

Bit of an update on this....

I got my yellow fever injection, 9 days ago.
Last Monday when I was in work I started to get very irritable and hot. My face became very itchy and eventually a bit swollen.

When this happened I rang the doctor to ask him about it. He said it definitely sounded like and allergic reaction to something but was surprised that it took so long to happen, he said he would have expected it to happen straight away following my injection.

I was told to take some anti histamine.

I when home took anti histamine and the swelling went down on my face. I decided to take yesterday off as I wasn't feeling too good. I sat at home all day with pains in my body like every nerve in my body was sensitive and generally feeling weak and tired. This dissipated a bit last night but now sitting in work today I am back to the way I was yesterday.

Having researched this on-line i know it is a side effect of the yellow fever injection, it states that it can happen anywhere from 5-8 days after the injection and last from 5-10 days.

My question is, has anyone every experienced anything like this?

I'm sure there is nothing the doc can do for me and I don't want to have to go and spend the money on him anyway.

Yeah, 3 of us got the vaccines in September and one of the guys had these symptoms about 6 days after the vaccinations. It eased up after about 3 days, and he was better within a week. It's a pretty harsh vaccine, but you need the yellow fever cert to go anywhere in Africa, so suck it up!

I got a 4-in-1 that did Hep, Meningitus, Polio and Tetanus that cost less than 30 euros. It left me a bit tired for a couple of days, but saved a lot of time and doctors trips.

Most people say the nastiest ones are the anti-malarials... I hope you've considered your options there!

  • That's a weight lifted off my mind that your mate was only sick for a week. We start the climb next Tuesday so I should be ok for then, was starting to think I wouldn't be able for the climb.
As you have said its starting to ease up now, still feel a bit sh*te.

Malaria tablets are always a good debating point, I'm gone for the ones i got last time, doxycycline or something like that, you take them a week before you go and 4 weeks after you get back. The side effect is being sensitive to sun light but I'm already like that. They are the cheapest ones aswell.

Just so you know your health insurance might cover some of the cost
