Driving Carrick-on-Shannon to Longford return this evening (about 45 miles) at at between 25 and 40 mph. Low speed more due to an A4 in front of me for most of the return journey than the weather. Ironically we were overtaken by an A4 (must've been a quattro ;))

    Nice!

Got 67Mpg myself on a trip from Athlone to Dungarvan last week, was taking it handy, but by no means going slow. 2.5hr trip done in 3hrs.

That's strange, do you drive a diesel? Varying between 25 and 40 shouldn't be the most economical way to drive a car I would have thought?

I find with most decent sized engined cars that an average speed of 80kph+ gives the best consumption, in my car constant 100kph+ gives the best readouts.

I always thought about 55mph was most economical, but I think it's more of a compromise between making good progress and economy.

There was a lad on the radio about a year ago who dispelled the 55mph thing too. He said basically the slower you go the better your fuel economy.

High gear. Low revs. Low speed. Gentle acceleration. Gentle braking. Lots of in-gear coasting.

My car thinks it's being driven by Gay Byrne!
