20m HDMI, Is it worth it?

    Hey guys,

OK planning a new set up at the mo. Problem is i need my AV receiver far away from the TV. Connected to the AV Receiver (Sony DH800) will be a PS3 and SkyHD.

I will need at lease a 15m HDMI cable, maybe even a 20m one to go from the AV receiver to the TV.

Is this stupid? Would there be a significant loss in quality. Are there any other solutions, im hearing about cat5 and 6. What is this can someone link me to a good guide?

20m HDMI is not routine - I'd suggest that you'd want to be buying a cable whcih you can be sure will work over that distance - I'd suggest buying from a reputable cable company - Lindy.ie would be my first port of call.

I know you can get baluns and run the signal over CAT, Have a look at Keene.co.uk, this http://www.keene.co.uk/multi.php?mycode=HDMIC530 for instance, they also carry mose expensive models. There are probably other suppliers of this kind of kit - Keene is the only one I'm aware of offhand.

As a personal choice, I'd be going for a high quality (ie certified by the maker to perform) HDMI cable for 20m.

    Agreed with Ritz.

I have a 15m HDMI and it works perfectly.

iirc HDMI is certified by attenuation, so the better quality wiring, the better chance of getting the full bandwidth.

Have a read here for a basic idea.

I agree with two earlier replies i have used twenty metre HDMI cables on a number of installs and never had a problem as long as the quality is good.
As a futureproof maybe put in a couple of cat 5 cables also, it would be worth it as it so low cost.

Long HDMI runs are typically used for projector installations so its a hot topic on the AV forums:

    and

I have a quality 15m (50ft) HDMI working fine with a projector and going through a passive splitter. Actually, I have an unopenend identical spare - ordered two by accident from US so you can have it @ cost price (€25) so not a hugh risk if it doesn't work. PM me if interested.

I have a 10 meter cable and are having problems with the screen losing signal briefly every now and again...
It does it with sky and the ps3...

I've added a booster which has helped... but as mentioned it still does it..

I'm thinking its the T.V. and I'm thinking another booster..??

10m with a booster and the signal still drops?

I'm running 15m without a booster (AVP -> TV), and the poster above you is running similar _with_ a splitter, so I'm not sure it's the booster that's the problem.

What pieces of equipment do you have connected?

Dont use a splitter, I have two cables running to the tele...
Panasonic 37" , not sure what model.
    Sky HD.
    PS3.
    Panasonic s/sound.

    Its doing my head in...!!

Buying another booster from E-bay later...
If this doesn't work then I think it has to be the tele...
