Arma2 + Joystick

Has anyone else found it more difficult to fly helicopters with a joystick than it is with keyboard and mouse?

Jets + joystick is natural enough, but I can't really keep the choppers on track. I find landing a chopper with the joystick the hardest.

Yeah, I use one. Thing is with the analogue throttle it starts in the middle. Its a flaw they haven't fixed as it suits the jets and harriers fine, but is just plain wrong with the choppers. I posted a thread here ages ago on how to map the controls, I'll dig it up

    Here it is:

I read somewhere that you should map both Turn Left/Right and rudder controls to the Z-axis, apparently it give you extra control (ignore the red conflict warning).

I initially had the X-axis bound to Bank Left/Right, but then switched it to Turn Left/Right which gave some interesting results. I might switch it back to bank.

I suppose the main problem I find with the joystick is the controls feel a bit "digital". I've tweaked the sensitivity of the various axes but can't seem to get it right I'm afraid.

Using the mouse just feels so much smoother and give much more measured control.

Using a Saitek "AV8R-03" which is a solidly built and accurate joystick, so I can't really blame the hardware.

    EDIT:
This guy might be on to something

I use a joystick too albeit a old HOTAS system and am a big fan of flight sims.

As anyone on the boards server can tell you my flying is err hit and miss :)

AS Pog mentioned ARMA2 is not really coded for proper joystick support. Will have to bear with it till they fix it. Think I read ACE2 lads are trying to fix it too.

I read someone on the BI forum made the claim that the GAU should sound like God unzipping his pants just before the surprise buttsex you are about to receive :D

I have no idea what a GAU is.

But I do have a joystick and have been playing with it in the armoury. The chopper was fine and the plane was sweet.

I have a Logitech Attack3 - has ****loads of buttons and seems to work quite well.

    Kerrrist!

By the way - ArmA2 with a joystick and a 40" Sony Bravia instead of a normal monitor on your desk behind your keyboard is fooking amazing. It's not widescreen - it's windscreen!

You need to run the A10 Hifi mod to truly appreciate the awesomeness of the A10.

This is what it sounds like with the mod and also, in real life too.

I don't bother with a joystick at all, mouse and keyboard is fine with a little tweak.

The default setting for the A and D keys and left and might mouse is a command called "turn" - its crap being a mixture of rudder and banking.

Rebind your left and right keys, A & D in my case, to the rudder command ( I think its PEDAL left & right). Bind mouse left and right to BANK (left & right) It makes things a lot easier - particularly low speed hovering in a chopper.

I couldn't imagine being bale to decapitate someone in a little bird without doing that.

X and C are turning on the keyboard as default. A and D gets into the mountain faster tho.
