Thanks VB but i'm after classic tax, I have 9 SE's of more recent vintage so the plan is to build up a vintage one with all the modern trim, electrics and engine.

extremely difficult to find the very early ones, even in Left hand drive. They usually start to come in around 81-82 onwards and then there is a good choice here on the continent, from minters for huge money, to ropey ones for around 1-2k. But somehow the really early ones seem to have vanished or are being cherised in heated garages, I don't know.
Funnyly I did come accross a couple of W116's with dates of 1st registration early 1980, so I guess those were 'late registrations', since the model changed over in August/September 1979.

9 SE's - I though I had it bad but you are definitely worse.:)

Similar project to one I'm starting soon - '96 XJR engine with manual box into 1978 XJC. Have all the bits just need to build the shed to do it in first.

How about putting the SE bits into a W123 - should fly - like this one - kind of a retro version of an E500

I have one, a 1980, to look at, even a ropey one will do as I can literally build a new car with all the stuff I have and it would be such a shame not to avail of the vintage road tax!!! I'm not too bad with the collecting these days, I have it down to 32 cars at the moment! The W126 is probably one of the finest cars ever built when you see the sh!te they're turning out lately.

Closest I have to 1980 is a 1983 280 SE. I too have looked for earlier 126s and can't find any! Yes, even though the 126 came out in 79 I also have a 1980 reg'd W116 so that is some overlap. Apparantly a lot of Mercedes customers were suspicious of the new 'plastic' S class back in the day and so Mercedes let the W116 hang around a while after the new model's launch.

Junky, I'm still in two minds what to do with the '83 car - it's not bad bodywise but is not a great colour and needs interior bits, electrical work, exhaust, a door or two and probably other stuff too. If you're selling parts let me know by PM; might do a deal if I do decide to restore.

Well done. How'd you find that - luck by searching around or trade secret?

I put an ad on donedeal, 240 phone calls later and I got 8 more cars and a few more to look at.:)

Oh, saw that ad and thought it was you... almost rang you myself to offer an '83 280SE.

    Wow! Donedeal gets results.

    Any chance of pics?
I have a November 79 W116 which I'm restoring at the mo (a light resto has turned full steam). Would be interesting to get the two together for a photo shoot when you get done (or before)!

I must collect them over the next few weeks but the other ones are stored around the place locally. I just sold a lovely W116 450 and have a 6.9 too. Also have a lovely 6 door W126 420SE limo. Spotted a W126 outside a house in Blackrock in Cork recently if your interested commited.

Thanks for the offer but no ta. I have too many cars as it is - not enough storage space at all.
