    See trailer:

First time he's directed something he didn't write. Is it just me or does the trailer make the film out to be completely awful

Something weird about it but looks alright

Christ.. I'm a big fan of the guy but couldn't stomach that at all. Looks horrible!

I think he should have quit directing after 'Dogma' to be honest.. his movies since have went from passable ('Clerks 2') to downright unwatchable ('Zack & Miri Make A Porno').

This looks like it'll fall into the latter.

I want to like him. I enjoyed his live show...I had to stop following him on Twitter cause he bored the arse off me (Yes I'm on twitter, move on)...But this looks like a film, the way stop or my mom will shoot looks like a film.

Least he's kind enough to let us know beforehand :D I cant stand most of his movies, his stage shows are alright as he's a natural speaker and very funny but he cant direct to save his life, and his dialogue is always very forced, its sounds like the stuff someone who's sat around for hours thinking of funny lines and monologues would say, no natural flow to the lines at all

Urggh can't say I like the look of this. Typical Hollywood buddy comedy (a genre which doesn't necessarily have to be awful - see Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!) - but usually is). He just seems to be trying too hard to please a wider audience these days, usually at the expense of the things that made his earlier films shine. Chasing Amy was a wonderfully askew rom-com, Zack and Miri was just another rom-com. When he has a bigger budget to work with, he usually messes it up, as his crowd pleasing side seems to always win out.

The opening generic score that tells you immediately "something serious is on the line in this movie but we wont be taking it very seriously" is fairly old.

Looks terrible.... although I did have a good laugh when Sean(n why the second n?) W. Scott said back "I'll shoot you in the face.

I've watched everything this guy has done. Clerks is a classic. Clerks 2 is really good fun but not quite as good as the first. Everything else is complete dog****.

'Chasing Amy' is complete dog****? You're out of your mind!

Chasing Amy is by far his best movie, Clerks is overrated but a great example of how to make a low budget success, Mallrats is garbage,Jay and Silent Bob is worse, Dogma is alright, Zack and Miri has its moments amongst all the dick jokes, Justin Long stole the whole movie imo

Agree with absolutely everything bar 'Mallrats' being garbage.

'Mallrats' is just a great fun all-too-quotable movie (watched it practically every day for a summer). Jason Lee is an absolute show-stealer in it!

    Love the opening lines..

Brodie: [Brodie's voice] One time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck up his ass. True story. He bought it at our local mall, so the whole fiasco wound up on the news. It was embarrasing for my relatives and all, but next week, he did it again. Different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room. So, I run into him a week later in the mall and he's buying another cat. And I says to him, "Jesus, Walt! What are you doing? You know you're just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too. Why don't you knock it off?" And he said to me, "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy.

    ---

But my favourite piece of Kevin Smith writing is this.. and will probably ALWAYS be this:

Jason Lee is one of those people who just plays himself in everything, unfortunately he always winds up playing an annoying asshole, i couldnt believe we're supposed to be rooting for this childish, petty dip**** as the hero of the movie, i wish Affleck would've beat the **** out of him, (I like Affleck, sue me :D )

I love pretty much everything Kevin Smith has done. Agree that Chasing Amy is his best film, probably followed by Dogma and Zack and Miri (What? I liked it)

Just watched this trailer though, and it would have been at least 5 times better if it wasn't for Tracy Morgan. I mean, wow, he just seems so awful. I know its a comedy, but from what we saw in the trailer, who on earth would let him be a cop?

Chris Rock would have been a much better choice, and Smith has worked with him before, so I think they really messed up there.

I'll still go see it, because as I said, I love Kevin Smith. But I'm more wary than I've been with any of his other films

I actually liked Jersey Girl. Thought it was charming to be honest.

As a writer for some stuff for TV, I can tell ya that it's not easy to go from fcuks all over the place to charming rom com. I think he did it well and the abuse he got for it was harsh...to the point where he has sold himself out and actually takes the piss out of the movie himself now. Stand by your work man...something tells me, this crap is what you're going to be taking the piss out of in months to come.

Looks pretty awful. Hollywood Homicide anyone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 103 ✭✭Raging Bob

Should have really stopped after Clerks.

I thought this was suppose to be called "A Couple of Dicks". Cop out sounds like a cop out name to appease hollywood censors.

Chasing Amy isn't bad it just couldn't have picked 2 more annoying leads. Everything else I like or love.

I enjoyed the trailer. I get the impression that a lot of the negative comments come from people who aren't fans of 30 rock. I like Tracey Morgan's "off the cuff, god knows what he's going to say" style. There's a good dynamic between the actors here, which shows in the final clip with the knock, knock joke segment.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm a fan of '30 Rock' and Tracy Morgan.

But this just looks like lazy un-funny comedy.

    Who dat dick ?

What the hell was Bruce Willis thinking ? Even the voiceover guy at the start knows what a pile of crap this is gonna be.

I really dont understand how he is a popular director. His stand up shows are way more entertaining than his movies, which to me are no better than the American Pie series, yet dressed up to be something 'more'.

I will wait for the red band trailer before passing judgment.

I gonna assuem that this is WB trailers and not the one that kevin put out. Smith aint funny when its clean, and I heard that this was one of teh best scripts knocking around last year. I read a it of it and it an that trailer look like two different movie.

    Extract below:
    JIMMY
Come on, Paul. You gotta stop thinking like this. It's making you nuts.
    PAUL
    I know. I know.
    DAVE (THE ROBBER)
    Does she vacuum a lot?
    PAUL
    What...?
    DAVE
Vacuum. Does she always have the vacuum out.
    Paul looks at Jimmy.
    PAUL
    Everyday.
    DAVE
Then she's doing something. My buddy used to vacuum his bed all the time to get his bitch's hair off the sheets and stuff before his old lady came home.
    PAUL
    Is that what they do?
    DAVE
    I don't know. That's what he did.
    PAUL
I'm looking for answers from a guy who ****s in people's houses.
    DAVE
    It's my calling card!
    JIMMY
    Shut your mouth...
    DAVE
    I'll be quiet.
    Silence then...
    DAVE
Hey, maybe your wife suffers from that CCD thing I heard on the news.
    PAUL
    What's CCD?
    DAVE
Cock Craving Disorder. It's when they crave the cock, any cock, every cock. She's probably in the middle of a DP right now.
Paul looks to Jimmy not knowing what "DP means.
    JIMMY
    Double penetration.
Paul spins aorund again to Dave.
    PAUL
I'll...I'll kill you! I will shoot you right ****ing now!
    DAVE
OK, OK... I'm sorry. I'm just playing. I'm going to jail for chrissake.
    PAUL
    Not another goddamn word.
Dave "locks" his lips and throws away the key. Silence, then...
    DAVE
    Knock, knock...
    Jimmy can't resist.
    JIMMY
    Who's there?
Paul shoots Jimmy a "What are you doing?" look.
    DAVE
    Orange...
    PAUL
    (angrily)
    Orange who?
    DAVE
Orange you pissed your wife is taking it in the ass from some other guy right now?
    PAUL
That's it! Pull the car over!

    .

Your not alone, I liked it too.

But I dont over analyse films. I watch and enjoy them, that's it. Life is much more enjoyable when your not tryign to hate stuff or pick holes in it.

I've watched, enjoyed and bought on DVD all of Smiths movies and the 3 evening with DVDs which are fantastic.

I agree. Smiths films are never going to be considered classics. But his films do what they're meant to do. He appeals to a particular audience. He never uses too big a budget. And his films always make more than the budget. He will always have a job as a director.

Whether or not this movie is a roaring success, I think he should be given credit for having the guts to direct something he didn't write. He's trying something he hasn't done before, and as such, he's trying to improve as a director. And if you've seen interviews with him, you'll know he's not doing it for the money. He's making less money from this film than he did on Dogma, a film he did over 10 years ago. Plus he gave up part of his salary on this film so as not to have to make it a PG13 film.

Just spotted that Moser didn't produce. Wonder if there's anything up there, or is this just a director for hire thing (nearly 40, gotta get a real job)

Yeah, Mosiers apparantly trying to become a director himself. Not sure what he's at though.

Kevin was hired by the studio to direct it even though he didn't write it. He said he would because he thought it was a great script, he worked with the writers before on a pilot for a US TV show (a US version of Manchild. I saw the pilot, it wasn't actually too bad), and he wanted to do something new. Plus he became friends with a main guy at Warner Bros and had a bit of a falling out with Harvey Weinstein.

Sorry, I've been listening to his SModcasts on the way to work lately and coincidentally, I'm at the SModcasts which he did when this film was first announced, so he's been talking about it.

After Kevin's flight debacle has made the news over the weekend.. decided to look up the red-band of trailer of 'Cop Out' - it's better than the green-band theatrical trailer, but from great either.

Hmmmm... big actors + Holllywood money equals middle of the road sh|te in most cases. Love all of Smiths movies, esp the small budget ones.

It seems that Hollywood likes him directing, but doesn't like his scripts. Doing one such movie, meh, it has to be done to get him "up there". If he breaks even or makes lots of money for them, I'd say they'll let him use his own scripts next time, but if it bombs out, I don't see him getting any more money from them. I don't know if I'll watch it or not, but I hope it does well, so he doesn't go the whore root to get money to fund his own scripts, but let them pay for his scripts.
