    Assuming he doesn't get arrested:
I'm still working out a few details, but I can tell you that I'll be speaking at University College Dublin on 2 February, and Galway on 4 February. I've got pending invitations from Cork and Belfast that I'm still trying to squeeze into the schedule; I may do both if I can work out transportation, but I'll do at least one of them. It would be nice to visit all four so I can say I've done Ireland east, west, north and south.

Hopefully I'll be able to go to the UCD one

Travel season begins again for me. I've already mentioned that I'm off to Winnipeg this weekend; the weekend after that is the Science Online conference. And then the whirlwind begins: I'm invading California, singlehandedly. Here's my schedule:

    W, 1/20: UC Santa Barbara
    Th, 1/21: UC Davis
    F, 1/22: Berkeley
    Sa, 1/23: UC Santa Cruz
Su, 1/24: De Anza College (Cupertino)
    M: 1/25: CSU Chico
    T: 1/26 Sacramento City College
    W: 1/27: Stanford
    Th: 1/28: Sierra College

That's insane. I may regret this when I stagger away from that grueling series. At least I'm giving the same talk at all of them, on creationism and complexity, so I won't have to struggle to keep the topics straight.

And that's not all! I'm coming home from California to hop on a plane to Ireland!

And then I come home in time for the Darwin Day madness! I'll be going to the University of Northern Iowa and South Carolina. More about those later.

    Blasphemer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,640 ✭✭✭Pushtrak

Thanks, Dave. Honestly, I wasn't familiar with his name, so after reading that, I read up about him.

Assuming he was not to do anything in Cork, I'd have to go with the Dublin one on the 2nd. Pity the Galway one isn't on the 2nd. Well, heres hoping for the Cork one (and not on a thursday; have a night course thursdays.)

What the story with the blasphemy remarks?
I'm not up on PZ Myers at all, tbh.

It's just that he's a rather well known blogger and biologist, and he focuses alot of his derision on creationists and religion in general. He's in the camp with Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens, though I don't think he has any books out so he's not as well-known. You can find a few of his lectures and interviews on YouTube. Funny guy. Huge internet following.

I actually knew that much - I just didn't understand the "getting arrested/blasphemer" references!

Now I see it's just because he's an outspoken chappie. :)

    Oh :)

Anyone know what he'll be talking about, or who invited him? His post doesn't say. I'd like to hear him speak, but if it's just an academic talk about developmental biology, then I wouldn't be so keen.

Probably more than just because he is outspoken, but likely in reference to the "cracker incident".

Yep, speaking with the UCD Secular Humanist Society! It'll be our prime event for the year.

R.O.A.R, but hopefully there'll be space for non-students.

Now, to find 200 euro for posters...

I hope so! I don't agree with 100% of everything he says but still wouldn't mind heading along.

It should be a good one!

Just for those non-students of NUIG, the O'Flaherty Theatre is on the Bank of Ireland end of the Concourse and is the second lecture hall from the end. It says "Téatar Uí Fhlathartaigh" above the doors.

This is being run by the NUI Galway Skeptic Society in association with ZooSoc.

Can anyone turn up for that lecture or do you have to have a ticket? I might take a spin up to Galway for that, if it is open to the public.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 kevinmcinerney

    Hello,

We are expecting it to sell out before the event so you will prob need to purchase the ticket beofre hand from our societies office. I will know more about this on Monday and I wil let you know how to go about it....

Hi, I would fly into Ireland for the event. Is there something on the 2nd at UCD? I emailed them but got this reply from the events manager:

"I have been trying to find out more with regards PZ Myers in February, but nobody seems to know anything aboutr it."

    Does anybody know more?

    Thanks!

Yes, he'll be speaking at UCD on Feb 2nd with the UCD Secular Humanist Society (thanks goes to skepticsoc NUIG for giving us the heads up btw). We haven't advertised it yet because our committee meeting is tomorrow night. However, I suspect we'll open the doors to the public for 5 euro entry. I'll confirm that here later on.

We'd prefer not to charge, but the society actually owes me over 200 euro on account of us not getting a grant this year because we're in our first year of operation. I'd like to get it back if possible (though I'll let it go if need be), and on top of that we need to find 200 more for the cost of this event...so charging non-members of the society is really the only option we have. I believe the Galway crowd are in a similar situation.

A fiver is perfectly reasonable. Like the fact its a tuesday. Well, to be specific, that its not a thursday.

Great, that's all I wanted to know. I gotta book flights and accommodation, so the 5 euros will be the least of my worries. I just wanted to make sure I could get in before I book flights ;)

Where can I find more details and track any changes?

ucdhumanistsociety.wordpress.com is where the updates will be, though don't expect any until at least this friday as the room isn't confirmed yet.

Also, there is limited space (max 350-503, depending on which room we get), and right of admission is reserved, with UCD students gaining first priority. However Kilroy, if you're going to the trouble to fly in and it's full, just ask someone to tell me that Kilroy from boards needs in and I'll see to it!

Yeah, we're in our first year as well, so we're in a similar situation to the UCD Secular Humanist Society.

Not entirely sure. You could try emailing them at socsbox@socs.nuigalway.ie , or ring them on 091 492852. I'd say you could reserve a ticket with them no bother, but I'm not certain.

It was just confirmed that you can only buy tickets in person from the socs box :( Soz.

Might want to tell the people at the box office that. My sister tried to get my a ticket today as she's an NUIG student and i'm in UCC. They told her they couldn't sell the ticket without an NUIG student number. :(

    @byron-

the event is definitely open to the public. i contacted the socsbox to see what happened today and the person i spoke to assured me it was human error, if she goes back she shouldn't have any trouble getting you a ticket. i'm really sorry about that.

it would be ideal if there was a phone or online booking service, but there isn't one available and we've no means to provide one so getting a ticket in person is the only option.

He's stated on his blog that he wants to do Belfast and Cork, but it might be a simple issue of time. I don't think he's ruled it out yet though.

because we've had a lot of interest from people outside galway, we've decided to let people reserve tickets by email and then pick them up on the day. if you'd like to book a ticket, email us at skeptic[at]socs[dot]nuigalway[dot]ie, with "PZ Myers Tickets" as the email subject, and include your full name, phone number and the number of tickets you want in the email.

tickets can also be bought on the door, but we'd recommend booking just in case.

anyone who has gone out of their way to get to the socsbox to pick tickets up in person, we're sorry :o
