Changing extractor Hood

We are thinking of buying a new extractor for the kitchen.
It is a hood set-up. It measures about 50cm.
I am just wondering how easy to replace are these and could one upgrade it for a more efficeint/effective model.

The one that is there I would assume has been in place for 12 years and whilst it works it does not do a good job on removing modest amounts of cooking related odours and steam etcetera.

    Any advice much appreciated.

Does the extractor actually vent to the outside or does it recirculate the room air through a filter?

It vents to the outside mate.

That is good, you have the hole and the wiring is in place so it should be fairly simple and straightforward to swap out the old for new.

I'm just wondering how can one know if a new one would/will do a better job?
Perhaps we should opt for a more powerful fan?
I did a small bit of research last night and they are not that expensive, any brands recommended?

    Thanks!
