Hiya was just wondering has anyone here been diagnosed with this? what are your predominant symptoms? Where you diagnosed in Ireland and is it possible to get it done on the medical card?
    Thanks!

This is fructose intolerance and I think just cutting foods out of the diet and introducing them back in to see if sx are still there are the only dx and treatment. I think. I could be wrong. Not sure if food tests are done by doctors, didnt think so but could be wrong.

I thought that fructose intolerance was an enzyme deficiency like lactose intolerance and that malabsorption was a just impaired absorption resulting in fructose arriving in the colon where the bacteria can metabolise it to gases? It's something I'm new so I know feck all about it but when I was looking around online there seemed to be a distinction between the two there.
I'm trying an elimination diet for the next two weeks, not much fun but on the upside no IBS today (first time since new years days without :))

You should ask your doctor but I think diet is the way to go.

    Hallo dear forum-visitors ,

A 2 year old thread !! but I will post my answer here on the right place

Fructose concerned or persons with fructosemalabsorption , can have
a look at the many postings I have already made on the fruitforum :
    http://iheartfruit.com/index.php/topic,1031.0.html
where I write also about possible problems with food belonging to
    the night-shade family ( tomatoes , eggplants , potatoes ... )

I discovered also a very good site with lots of articles on all kinds of
    gastro-intestinal problems : http://practicalgastro.com

They have a Search Archive button , so you can search for their free articles on
any kind of gastro-intestinal problem , from the period 2002 until 2011

In particular , they have a very good readable 10-page pdf article on fructosemalabsorption ,
written by professionals , correctly putting fructose in its wider context :

    http://practicalgastro.com/pdf/August07/Aug07BarrettArticle.pdf
    practicalgastro.com/pdf/August07/Aug07BarrettArticle.pdf

If fructose is really a concern or a problem for you , a rather good list of fructose versus glucose content
of several kinds of food , is listed on :

    http://healthhype.com/foods-high-in-fructose-sorbitol-fructans-and-fodmaps.html
    healthhype.com/foods-high-in-fructose-sorbitol-fructans-and-fodmaps.html

    Have an nice day :)
