Backup Software & Conversion Software - OSX

    Guys,

Hoping you can help me out here. I'm new to all this Mac stuff (& loving it), but there's a couple of things missing from what I would have had on a PC & I don't know where to get them. I'm looking for preferably free software here.

First off is some backup software. I have a server in the attic which I used to backup all my documents/photos/music/movies/important stuff to. It's a HP media server & it sits there running away happily. I used to have a piece of software on the PC that would do a backup to it, by checking my desktop folders that I had configured to, checking the corresponding ones on the server & just updating what had changed. The backups are uncompressed & the drives are mapped to the PC/Mac. I can't find anything like this for the mac.

Secondly, I used to have something for ripping my DVDs to AVI (for media streaming) and then converting it to iphone compatible (two separate files). Again, I can't find anything to do this. I tried handbrake but (it's probably me) I can't get it to do this.

    Any recommendations ?

TimeMachine is built into the mac, you can create a volume on your backup server and there is a terminal command that you can run to fool the mac into thinking that is's backing up to an actual time machine server. I have this setup working perfectly at home with a few macs backing up to an NAS server. I mount the volume at login so that the time machine can find it. There is also a third party app where you can change the default time machine backup schedule to your own liking, but I can't remember the name now.

Not sure if handbrake can rip dvds but mac the ripper can. I then use handbrake for converting the rips using the built in presets, just a few clicks and the quality is decent.

Thans Jester. I have time machine working on a local drive, but the server has everything from my PC days (gasp - 12 years) & I really don't want to take a chance on it being corrupted. Was really looking for something that can run in conjunction with time machine.
