Just wanted to let you all know that business name registration from CRO is taking 9 weeks. This has implications for domain name registration which expires after 4 weeks. Not sure what happens my fee paid for the domain in that case.

Maybe send your host an email explaining the situation?

If CRO are issuing receipts or other proof that you have applied for RBNs then the IEDR *might* accept that.

I'll see if IEDR staff have anything to say on the matter

Im not 100% but I'd say if you explained to whoever you registered the domain with that there is a delay with the CRO application they might extend it.
Maybe Blacknight or someone else in the know could confirm this.

    Edit: Too late :)

A receipt doesn't nessecarily mean that you'll receive that business name but if you hear anything from IEDR let us know.

Must be the snow holding them up! :p

I know, but the IEDR were accepting them for IE domain registrations, which is all that we care about :)

out of interest, just say one wanted to start a business without having a website or anything .....(regular consulting business) could one apply for the business name and practice or operate whilst waiting for the business name?

    Is this legal?

There are no restrictions on business names. If you look at the business name register you will se plenty of examples of duplicated business names. Business names are registered to an individual.

Company names are restricted. There can be no duplication of a company name.

As a matter of interest, was the apllication for the name in question filed electronically or manualy?

I applied to register a business name in August last year. I applied electronically and was told it would take 8 weeks. I don't think it took quite 8 weeks but it wasn't far off.

Yes, you must apply to register the name within a set time frame from commencing to trade under that name. As I recall you have thirty days to do this.

I represent my institute on a Accountants/CRO formum where we meet three times a year to discuss issues affecting people dealing with the CRO. If you could send me some feed back like the above I will bring it to the next meeting which is on the 21st Jan.

I've started a new thread on it. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=63867594#post63867594

I submitted a business name registration online about 10th December, and was fully registered on Tuesday last, so bit less than 4 weeks I think. I found the CRO to be very helpful. I needed the business number for Wednesday, so rang them up Monday, explained the situation, and someone rang me back Tuesday morning with the number.

I too always find the people in the CRO as helpful as possible. They are making good progress in providing on-line form completion and verification. This means that once a form is completed on-line and printed all they have to do is scan it. This has greatly improved the speed that forms are registered over the past number of years, however cutbacks and recruitment embargoes are effecting them at present.
