Need to get my hands on a transformer for lights and have a year to get it.

    Output is 12v 1.67 A 20VA

    I have a universal one that is 12V 300MA

I am guessing the 300ma is the reason why it wont work.

You are correct. The current rating on your transformer is too low.
I would try Radionics (Dublin) or Ebay.

    what are you powering exactly.
if it's halogen ,an electronic trafo will do.minimum load is about 20va i think

Thank you that was going to be my next question. It belongs to a fibre optic tree so its powering a bulb and a fan. It has a particular connection on the top but the universal chargers seem to have the fitting just not the ampage

Is there a tolerence i can buy or do i have to buy the exact one. I clearly am clueless on this. So any imformation appreciated.

    Yes

300mA = 0.3 amps and it seems that you require 1.67 amps.

Yes I have noticed that too with IBL and Robus transformers. When the load is less then the output voltage is less than 12 volts. Simply increase the load of the transformer with the addition of a 20W lamp then it would be suitable.

afaik the fibre optic trees use a mr16 halogen bulb so 'electronic' will prob suit.
A robus 70va will have leads on it for plug and tree

usually safer to get an 'exact' replacement as danjo said.
you can then plug it straight in.
trafo is the problem? you have checked the halogen bulb??
