At a recent driving course, the presenter informed us that we will probably soon all end up with five year driver's licences. Any inkling of info on this among us?

Actually, that point wasn't mentioned and when asked, the question wasn't answered!

5 year licence is well and good, as long as it doesn't require a test each time...

We can't handle the amount of tests we currently have without trying to process extra. A standard eye exam and maybe a quick theory test that covers any new legislation would be all I'd like to see if anything at all.

Actually I would rather that renewing a licence required some form of test. Would sort out a lot of the shit that goes on on Irish roads...

Seconded. Instead of squandering money on meting out punishment and on absurd road furniture like speed bumps, spend the bloody money on education and mandatory re-testing.

It would require real ambition and the cojones to challenge to popular culture. Unfortunately I see that the political classes in our country by and large lack these attributes.

Don't suppose he also mentioned that we'll all be getting credit card sized driving licenses soon as well?

By EU directive (Directive 2006/126/EEC), all EU countries have to implement a common (credit card) driver licence format by 2013. According to this directive, the licence will be valid for either 10 or 15 years, depending on the State in question. So while we'll have credit card style licences relatively soon, there's nothing to suggest the validity will be decreasing to 5 years.
