Hi guys this question has probably being asked a million times but i'm new to boards so not really sure how to search threads. I was just wondering do you have to be registered with the teaching council to apply for sub work. I have finished my degree but do not have a hdip and have heard of a lot of people getting subbing?

    thanks in advance

    Short answer, no.
You won't get a full time permanent position without the dip (with possible exception of a VEC school, but becoming rare) but there's a chance you'll pick up a few hours subbing or even a year long contract if you're very lucky.
I'd say at least half the people who have done the PGDE over the last decade have subbed unqualified in a school;most do it to make up their points for the application to do the post grad.
It will be more difficult to get hours than it was though, particularly after kerfuffle of retired teachers debacle-any hours going will be taken up by a qualified teacher where at all possible. You could just pop in and ask if you could observer or team teach, depending on how keen the school is on the idea. Definitely recommend going back to your own school regardless of what you actually want to do, best bet in my experience.
