Cardinal Daly's Funeral not live on RTE/BBC!

Although BBC streamed today's funeral of Cardinal Daly I was surprised that neither BBC nor RTE showed live Television coverage. If my memory serves me right Tomas O'Fiaich's funeral was live on both BBC/RTE. A friend told me today he remembers Cardinal Dalton's funeral live on TV here in NI in 1963! Was decision taken not to show the funeral down to financial considerations? Anyone any ideas?

How much would it have cost if it was already being streamed online. They possibly thought a very small audience would want to watch it.

Audience shouldn't always be a factor. I don't think either Patrick Hillary's or Charlie Haughey's funerals got TV coverage, why should this funeral be any different?

I personally don't think there should be any great urgency to show this funeral. Whose funeral would be next.

I agree, I am just point out that to neither the President nor the Taoiseacht's funerals were broadcast.

In general Audience shouldn't be a factor. whole other issue.

RTÉ coverage of Charles Haughey funeral

RTÉ Television and Radio will broadcast the Requiem Mass for Mr Haughey live from the Church of Our Lady of Consolation, Donnycarney, Dublin, from 11.30am tomorrow morning.

Coverage on RTÉ One is expected to replace regular programming until 4.30pm.

Funerals shouldn't be aired on the TV unless you get Elton John to sing at it!

President Hillary's funeral was broadcast live on RTE as I remember watching it as was Charlie Haughey's. Just wondering when previous Cardinal's funeral was shown why not this one?

Perhaps RTÉ feel that with the number of revolutions about the Catholic Church in Ireland and the move away from the power that the church once had on this nation that it was improper to provide time to such a funeral. Cost could also have been a factor.

However the news ran numerous reports about the funeral through out the day.

Very perceptive post. Think you've maybe 'hit the nail on the head' there.

Perhaps they should have shown it on RTE NEWS NOW as was done with Joe Duffy's Liveline on Christmas Eve from Grafton Street. That way noone could complain they did not cover it, but noone would have seen it, as it is ONLY TESTS NOT A SERVICE!

    :D

RTE NEWS NOW isn't a test online.

I know that, but it was meant as a joke.

I even put a green smiley face on it so that it might be understood as a joke. :D

To be fair to RTE they did give the various removal services good coverage in the days after Cardinal Daly's death and they sent a camera crew to the home of Justin Keating in showbound Ballymore Eustace for his funeral service and burial yesterday. They can't be everywhere.

Cardinal Daly was 92 and I really don't see the point in broadcasting live TV coverage of a mass in this day and age, whether Elton John sings there or not.

If they televised Cardinal Dalton's funeral all I can say is that that happened in different times.

I think the point is that Cathal Daly was retired from office. Had he died while still serving as cardinal like his predecessors(O' Fee and Conway?), the funeral would, probably, have been shown.

Well, he was no George Best.... :p

Actually, why should any funeral be televised? A private, dignified ceremony ruined by press clamouring for the juicy shot of someone breaking down and crying? Pur-leeze... If you wanted to see the funeral, then attend it. If you can't make it, then donate some of the money you would have spent on travel towards the deceased's favourite charity or something. Why does everything these days have to be turned into a media circus?

I would think thats a bit harsh but on the other hand I would probably say something similar about Haughey

Well at least there is a chance that people would turn up to Elton John's funeral. You could see tumbleweed on the streets at Haughey's funeral, causing some embarassed comments from the Rte commentators.

RTÉ Reporter: And they said they would come and dance on his grave, perhaps they are waiting until after the burial.
