There is no worse sensation than your wheel losing traction and sliding, just thinking about it gives me the shivers..

I've been very lucky so far, haven't had more than the odd slide, haven't come off yet, fingers crossed though!

I have fallen of (at low speed) about 8 times duing the recent cold snap.Worst injury was to the sleeve of my favouite warm jersey-it has a hole at the elbow that just keeps getting bigger every time I wash it..

A couple of wobbles but no "sustained, uncontrolled ground contact" to report.

The most grevious thing done to my body in the current cold snap is the 4kg I've put on over Christmas.

I'm very close to admitting defeat and buying a turbo......

lost the back wheel and landed on my arm which kinda popped open  3 inch gash on my elbow needed 18 stitches. no cycling for at least a month :(
there's something positive about it though. lots of tlc from the missus :D

My head nearly fell off when I hit black ice one morning last week. I was lucky I was wearing a jacket with a large collar though cause it stopped it from falling to the ground before I settled it again.

    Now that is impressive.

I almost puked looking at the second one.

    very impressive :)

I don't feel too bad about the hole in my jersey now.:)

Holy cr@p. I only looked at the first one. If the second one is worse, I can't imagine what it's like.

I can't even understand how that happened.

Jaysus - that's what you call "kinda popped open" - it looks like someone unzipped your arm!

No. 2 is deffo a winner and how do we get lumen fired for insisting that pictures like that are posted:)

Hope you're feeling better, but milk it for all it's worth!

The second one? The first one is far better, gives far more of an impression of someone scooping out half his arm! The depth is impressive.

Well done with that, and get well soon.

its actually not as bad as it looks. just an uncomfortable feeling of the arm splitting open again when i move it. going to be an awesome scar in a few weeks time.
my personal favorite is no. 3.

thanks for all the well wishing.

    Jesus that looks sore,

It could be a lot worse, the weather could be fine, evenings long, and you could be losing a lot of time on the bike.

On the plus side the missus is looking after you, hope recovery goes well.

Just went back to have a look at the two you added - no. 3 is impressive alright, 4 looks a bit rough.

How neat is the stitching - if whoever did you was a good stitcher the scar mightn't be too impressive (unfortunately!!) - should look good when it starts weeping a bit!!!

stitching was done in Tallaght A&E and is far from neat. the scar is going to be impressive. chicks dig scars so i'm ok with it.

@morningwood, hope you heal well, just don't go telling the chicks that you went cycling on ice or they'll think you're mad, tell 'em you did it on your training camp in Majorca

My prospect of my commute home tonight is now starting to fill me with trepidation.

    Heal well, @morningwood.

Yeah me too! Feeling a little foolish for cycling in now esp that it's now snowing outside!!!

Just saw this on bikeradar: How to cycle in the snow.

More for trail riding but I'm sure there are some useful tips in there for commuting (nothing about how to avoid skidding cars mind you).

    Here's another one :)
    http://realcycling.blogspot.com/2010/01/tips-of-iceberg-guide-to-cycling-in.html
    • Plan your route carefully - for example around pubs, branches of Ask and Carluccio's etc, in case you need refuge

    • Set out with equipment you might need in case of blizzard, such as a camera to take pictures of stranded cars for the BBC website

    • Throwing snowballs may look fun, but it can be dangerous and distressing for some people - worth remembering when drivers cut you up on an icy Waterloo roundabout

    • Beware ice. Most whisky is best neat anyway.

    • Preparation is everything: make sure you have your whinges about council gritters all ready in case of media interviews

    • If stopping to make a snowman, avoid charges of racism and sexism by not making him male or white

    • Though they may look identical as they come out of nowhere to land on you, no two white vans are exactly the same

Agreed, #3 wasn't there when I first looked, it is a classic.

Christ almighty, they are some serious pictures dude! Reminds me more of a shark bite attack than a fall off a bicycle! Were you wearing any clothing over it at the time?

I read that wrong at 1st and thought you'd been attacked by a shark.

I can't even understand how that happened.

I know looks more like a disgruntled missus went at him with a sharp instrument rather than a crash.
