    Hi guys,

training with ACCA. I keep hearing a professional qualification will open up "alot of opportunities".

I keep hearing this phrase but what are they exactly are people talking about. Besides working as an accountant, what else can be done with this qualification?

thanks in advance for the information

    regards,

    Connery

As an Accountant your skills cover the most important business function. Many accountants go on to managment roles where there financial analysis skills allow them to make critical decisions quickly. Michael O'Leary, Ryanair is a good example of an accountant who has used his talents well.

Perhaps you could follow in Padraig Harrington’s footsteps - your ACCA colleague - and win some Golf Majors? :D

I think it may just be acca/cima marketing speak - it's very unclear to me as to what opportunities it would open other than working as an accountant. Yes the above chap cited the example of Michael O'Leary, but in my opinion that's the most irrevelant example someone could possibly give you. Can anyone give advice on this in more general terms?

Michael O'Leary is probably irrevelant as he would have probably got to where he is today even if had began in baggage handling in ryanair.

The new director general of FAS, Paul O'Toole and Philip Casidy, CEO of GEM are other examples of qualified accountants of have gone further up the management chain. When reading the interviews the business papers have a look at the background of people being interviewed. Quite often you will find that have accountantcy some where.

It's more a case of that it gets you in the door and that you will be regarded as someone with at least a basic financial knowledge. From there it's down to your own ability. You don't get paid €€€ or get a top position just because you have an accountancy qualification.

    Exactly.
