Employee working abroad. Health Insurance?

This seems to be the most suitable place to ask this question, move it on if not.

We have recently had to send an employee overseas for work. Switzerland. He has been there almost 3 months now, and we have an extension of another 3-6 months.

He came to us recently saying that he has to set up a separate health insurance over there, that normal travel insurance is not covering him.

Anyone know much about this? I would have thought his own private health insurance, or some add on to it, would suffice. It also seems like it is costly for him, although I don't have exact figures.
I cant seem to find anything about it on the net, if someone can point me in the direction of info it would be appreciated also.

Are we responsible for paying this? we already pay him a pretty healthy daily rate.
