I am just about ready to flush my Itouch {Christmas Present} down the loo.
Everything is working OK except the email.
    OK,this is the problem;
I have eircom broadband at home, but the itouch wont recognize it.
To by pass this problem I opened a Gmail account.
So far so good, except that I can' t send mail.
I can receive it no problem.
I can even send mail to my eircom email address.
    What am I doing wrong???
    Please help.
    Kind regards,
    Kate..

maybe the configuration is wrong? check your email settings if outgoing mail server is mail.gmail.com

    EDIT:
    sorry that was smtp.gmail.com

Go to Setting -> Mail-> your mail address -> OutGoing mail server -> what does it say.
i think you haven't set it up properly.

If your can not connect your iTouch to your home WiFi, how can it access the Internet to make use of Gmail?

Or do you mean you can't access your Eircom email account?

To send and receive email - assuming you have a working WiFi connection - you need to set up an email account for each email service you wish to use by entering settings so the iTouch knows what servers it should contact in order to send and receive for each mail account.

You need two different settings for sending and receiving mail because each uses a different server. Incoming mail usually uses a POP3 server. Outgoing mail uses a smtp server.

According to the Eircom site, the server settings for sending mail (outgoing) should be mail1.eircom.net the server port should be 25 and the username and password should be left blank. The POP3 settings should be webmail.eircom.net

Unlike the smtp server, the POP3 server settings need a username and password to be set also. Your username will likely be whatever is to the left of the @ symbol in your email address.

This is the eircom site for email account settings:

    http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/&/?St=143&E=0000000000205761406&K=125&Sxi=4&Question4411=obj%284411%29:obj%284412%29

This how Apple says you enter these settings on your iTouch:
    Setting up email accounts

Email account setup with Mail is easy. If you're setting up an email account for the first time on iPhone or iPod touch, simply touch the Mail icon on the Home screen. If you're adding an additional account with software version 2.0 or later, touch the Settings icon on the Home screen, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select Add Account.
If you're setting up a Microsoft Exchange, MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo! or AOL account, touch the icons for those services on the Add Account screen and enter your account information. If you're setting up an email account from another provider, select Other. In software version 2.0 or later, Mail can automatically setup many popular POP and IMAP email accounts using just your email address and password.1 As Mail looks up settings that match your email account you may see a note appear that will describe any limitations you may experience in using your email account. If Mail cannot find the settings needed to setup your email account, refer to the documentation from your email provider on how to manually setup an email account.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1385

Be aware that if you ever hook up to a WiFi network that does not connect directly to Eircom, you will only be able to check mail and will be unable to send it using an email client. This obviously does not apply if you are using webmail via a web browser.

thats the problem with these iTouch things, you should of bought an iPod Touch :D

on a more serious note, maybe delete all your email settings and re-enter them to create a new account as such.

Seems no one else has posted a solution to this issue. I took a while to crack it , but the directions below will definately work and any one that wants to get eircom e-mail to arrive on the itouch in a similar way to GMAIL for example, will be successful with these settings. Hope this is of help...."kenelvpres"

    On the Itouch

    click on "settings" icon
    scroll to "mails, contacts, calendars"
Under "Accounts" heading , open up a new account

when the new account page opens, remember to select "POP" in the top right of screen

    Under POP ACCOUNT INFORMATION heading
    Name: Just enter your name
Address: just enter your full eircom email address
Description: enter full eircom e-mail address again

    Under INCOMING MAIL SERVER heading
    Host Name: mail2.eircom.net
username: enter the first part of your email address i.e "joe Blogs" ....dont enter in "@eircom.net
    password: enter your account password

    Under OUTGOING MAIL SERVER heading
    SMTP: mail2.eircom.net

now press the arrow right beside "mail2.eircom.net"
under the PRIMARY SERVER heading you should see "mail2.eircom.net"...touch the arrow to the right of it

    Host name: mail2.eircom.net
    Server port: 25

Now tap the SMTP left arrow and go back one menu
Now tap the left arrow at top of screen and continue as directed below

    Under ADVANCED heading
    Use SSL: Off
    authentication: enter no text
    delete from server: never
    server port 110

Kenelvpres has it on the button but I suspect the original poster is not quite sure what the actual problem is. Your problem was poorly explained.
