Hi, I need to buy two new tyres 205/55/16. I don't need any expensive one, but some cheap(budget tyres), but not the crap one made in vietnam(no name) or something like that. Tyres that you can ride on them a bit(obout 20k), and quiet enough. Can you advise me any one and where is the best place to buy them?

www.camskill.co.uk are nearly always cheaper than eiretyres.com and have quicker delivery.

Ok. but what tyres should I buy? There are lots of different tyres, which you can recommend me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

What make and model are they going on?

A lot of the time if you spend very little on tyres, you'll get very little in return.

For instance, I'll never buy cheap ass tyres for my 200sx as at the end of the day they're what's sticking you to the road;)

I'll only use Goodyear Eagle F1's, Falken FK452's or Toyo Proxes.

Budget tyre usually equals budget performance. Oh, stay away from Nankangs whatever you do. They're nicknamed ditchfinders:D

On the other hand, another vote for Camskill. Brilliant service and very quick to deliver. Less than 48hours from UK to Galway.

I've got around 40,000km on a set of Continenetal premium contact 205/55/16 (V rated I think). Probably still got another 20,000 km left on them too (all motorway work).

Hard wearing and grippy enough in the warm and dry, but cr@p grip in the cold and no point having an accelerator in the ice.

Camskill will deliver 2 Kumho Ecsta Sports for €112. Add €30 for fitting and you're at €142.

    http://camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m53b0s291p4183

You can get cheaper ones than these, but they'll be Campiros or Savas or Triangles or other rubbish. The Ecsta Sports aren't premuim tyres but they're pretty good and standard equipment on some new cars.

Camskill do Falkens for the same price but they're out of stock at the mo.

Im in the same boat as the OP. I'm driving a Passat. It's pretty hard to find a good budget tyre.

Anyone ever bought second hand ones before? from the likes of gumtree etc.

A lot of second hand tyres are winter tyres from the continent. They've been discussed loads of times here before,

on one hand you can get them for €25 each and are often good brands.

on the other hand you don't know the history of the tyre -

on another hand again if you buy a second hand car it'll effectively have 4 second hand tyres under it.

That's usually the gist of any argument/discussion

I just bought a pair of bridestones (can't remember the name) but the profile is slightly different (205 50 16) fo €88 each, for my Passat. (fitted)
I already have brigstones on the front and rear (exact same tyre) and I found them to be exelent - in all conditions.
It's hard to say what milage I got from them because of tyre rotation, but I know I got over 20k for sure.
The garages have a stock of partly used tyres from Germany. Buddy just put on some continentals (sp?) and they are like new. Then again, he is mates with the tyre guy.
Ring around and ask for partly worn tyres. You can see yourself how worn they are and they are half the price.

So what brand or what model of tyres will you recommend for me? Of course new one. I don't wont to spend more than 100E for 1tyre.

Sorry Colm, but I had these on my mondeo when I bought them. I found them very hard, with minimal grip. I would'nt put them on a wheelbarrow.

I had them on my Punto Sporting about 10 years ago and replaced them with Pirelli P5000s which were much better. Of the budget tyres they're still probably the best option.

I use Bridgestones 205 55 R16 on our avensis. Cost 100 a pop in We fit in Newbridge. 110 in Healys in Naas with 4 wheel balancing included in that price.

On my company mondeo I use Bridgestones and they were 150 a pop for 215 55 R16 and that was the best I could get in Dublin about 3 months ago. I get 40000km from the Bridgestones and find them a good all round tyre.

Put a good tyre on the car. It will cost you more if you use crap ones and you hit something after loosing grip.

Anyone know if this tyre http://camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m53b0s412p6341 will fit my Passat( 205/60/15 )

There seem to be 3 different Kuhmo tyres. One is KH17 and the others KH15. Anyone know the difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

KH15 is the old version of the KH17. The KH15 is supposed to be a good quiet tyre with good enough grip and predictability - I can only assume the 17 is an improvement although they still sell both types.

    The blurb:

    KH15
    KH15.gif
    Features

    * The SOLUS KH15 is a symmetrically patterned tyre giving well balanced performance in a wide range of driving conditions. The range currently extends to some 70 sizes to fit everything from super-minis to large saloons and estates.
    * Four straight grooves for maximum aquaplaning resistance.
    * Streamlined centre tread blocks for highspeed stability and good water drainage.
    * Shoulder blocks aligned for minimum noise combined with high lateral traction and good mileage performance.
    * Sipe density and geometry optimised by supercomputer for excellent braking on wet and dry roads

    KH17:
    kh17.gif
    Features

    * The SOLUS KH17 is a contemporary performance tyre for such top selling hatchbacks and saloons as Ford's Fiesta and Focus, Volkswagen's Polo and Golf and Vauxhall's Corsa and Astra.
    * It has already won the approval of a number of major European car magazines and was awarded Best Buy status by Which? Magazine.
    * The SOLUS KH17 features three wide longitudinal grooves for optimum wet weather performance and exceptional stability thanks to reinforced tread blocks equipped with waved semi-grooves.
    * The KH17 is available in a range of sizes from 155/65R13 to 225/50R17 and speed ratings H to V.
    * Proven high levels of wet and dry traction.
    * Lower noise levels.
    * Improved ride comfort

Thanks!! I'll go with the newer one. It seems like it picks up where the old one left off and improved or change it a bit.

    OP, my 2 cents:
I'm also currently buying new tyres (4 of them) of the same size as the OP (205/55/R16) for my own car (2005 Volvo S40 1.8S).

My experience in shopping around for tyres & fitting so far:
    • Best prices: Camskill.co.uk
    • Best places to get them fitted in Dublin: see eyretyres.com for a rake of examples.
    • Best prices for having them fitted in Dublin: between €5 and €10 per corner/tyre + €2 disposal per tyre.
    • Best price for balancing/allignment/tracking: TBC.
    • Make I've decided on: Goodyear EfficientGrip (H or V rated)
    • Model/type: EfficientGrip
    • Reason: best overall reviews, best compromise between budget and premium. Tried, tested & endorsed by UK police force.
    • Best all-in-one solution in Northern Ireland for purchasing of tyres, fitting, disposal and tracking (tracking fee of £24.50 refunded if tracking not needed): Kwik-Fit.co.uk
    • Difference in price between Kwik-Fit.co.uk all-in-one solution (excluding tracking) Vs buying on Camskill and using local fitter: €20 more via Kwik-fit & petrol to the North. Offset by Northern shopping savings :)
    • Buying via Camskill due to weather. Driving up another time to get a full service in Kwik-fit (£149).
I'm sure someone will disagree/contest with the above (there's always one!) but again this is my experience. OP, I hope this helps.

I wouldn't go anywhere near Kwik-fit. You'll get a much better price and service from almost everywhere else. I fitted 205/55x16 Bridgestone ER300s to my wife's car for £70 each from Charles Hurst tyres.

I dont know what sizes these come in but I put 2 fronts on my SEAT Cordoba 1.4tdi last January and to be honest i dont spare it in the wet or dry.. Had no frights. ( yet ) :D

    Sonar:
205/45/16 = €160 ish. Fitted at Rathcormac Tyre Centre Co.Cork

colm, what brand would you recommend for the Verso? I had Toyo T1-R's on it before and they were great and quiet but didn't last p155ing time on the front with the big heavy diesel engine right above them

looks like they are back in stock with the Falkens aswell

How do tire fitters feel about you ordering from the likes of Camskills? Are most of them happy to fit the tires or would you get ones that would kick up a fuss that you didnt buy the tires from them?

If you reckon you will get 60,000km out of any tyre, they will have a very hard compound.

Hard compound = Long life and poor grip (worse in cold)
Medium compound = Medium life and medium grip
Soft compound = Short life and high grip.

There is no sure thing as a tyre that has both high grip that will do 30kkm+

Give Will a call in "On The Spot tyres" he is a mobile tyre repair man but is an honest bloke. I have dealt with him for years. He will tell sell you a middle of the road tyre for cheaper than a garage.
Here is his web: http://onthespottyres.com/. Hope this helps
